I'm hoping to ride Boston, MA (school) -> Yorktown, VA (home) after graduation in May. Haven't decided if I'm going to go right in May or wait for a little later in the summer. I need/want to recruit someone to ride with me.

The plan is to fly to Vancouver, ferry to Nanaimo then ride to Tofino on the west coast then back to Vancouver, hang for a few days then cross the Rockies to Calgary and stay with friends for a few days then back home to Montreal. If all works out.

I spent eight days camping on Long Beach in the Pacific Rim park in 2000, wanted to go back and do it by bike ever since. It is a truly magical place!

I did a 500 mile tour last year Seattle, Gulf Islands, Vancover Is, and down Widbey Island - it's on the agenda for next year but may head to Kingston, Port Angles, Vancover Island, San Juans, Vancover , then Seattle. I need to expand my horizons. Money is not my issue it's time - my job eats it all up, So if anybody has an idea for a incredible 7 to 10 day trip in the US let me know. thanks

Planning on the Trans-Canada trip East to West. Starting in early May if all things go well. The cold winter months will be spent planning a route which will no doubt change with each mile.
Any joiners?

This year has been a restart year....in March of 2004 I had a quadruple bypass...began riding back and forth on the street in front of my house three weeks after surgery. Since January 1st I have done a little under 2000 miles, many on the local B&A bike trail ....13.3 each way, plus a 11 mile loop around local airport. We did a couple of organized tours of Marylands Eastern Shore, and the Lower portion of the Outer Banks....my fantasy for 2006 is to ride in Europe....I would love to see the Provance region and Cote de zur and then ride down into the Tuscany area of Italy. Not having been to Europe before I dont know if its even reasonable to think of a trip this length. Oh, yeah, I am semi retired....so I should have most of the spring and summer months.

I want to find a good trip in Ontario, did the lakeshore east trip last year, this year I am thinking of maybe Yonge Street, which is theoretically 1400 KM, or maybe to Manitoba, though I heard some bad things about that route. Anyone have a 1000 K Ontario trip that is worth doing?

"Yonge Street", or actually highway 11, is not the best you could find. Lots of traffic between Barrie and North Bay in parts that haven't been twinned yet, and ditto for about 100 km north of North Bay. Then the road turns west and it's total autonomy with tiny villages every 100 to 200 km until Nipigon. And from Thunder Bay to Fort Frances (some 500 km), there is only one village which is 5 km off the road.
Other ideas:
– Riding along the Trent Severn waterway, seeing cottages, the various locks and some history.
– Prince Edward County (peninsula south of Belleville and Kingston). Not very challenging, but very relaxing and scenic. All highway 2 between Port Hope and Montréal, and maybe a side trip to Ottawa, could offer a very nice ride if you follw Brian Hedney's instructions.
– More rugged would be Manitoulin island (access through the dull Bruce peninsula) or the Algonquin Park.
- Not all in Ontario, but Eastern Ontario – Western Québec is very interesting yet rarely cycled. From Ottawa to Pembrooke and Petawawa in Ontario, there are nice local roads besides highway 17 (actually they are former versions of it). And from Gatineau to Fort Coulonge, highway 148 doesn't have too much traffic. You will go from plains to mountains. Gatineau to Quyon is very hilly (you could do it in Ontario and take a ferry), but West of Quyon, it is a lovely plain and the former CP railway has been converted in a rail trail if you prefer that sort of things.
East of Ottawa, scenery is also very interesting, but traffic makes it a bit more challenging too.

I did the whole trip from Toronto to Fredericton, including PEC. I need to find something equaly nice through Ontario. To Ottawa, and from there East would be nice.
East of Quebec on the north shore is beatiful, but i think it is pretty nearly vertical as I rememeber it. I like Quebec, but I was thinking of staying closer to home.

We get a forecast with a 4 day good weather window and I'm jumping on my LHT and riding the Olympic Peninsula or the San Juan Islands, maybe use the ferries to do a Seattle/Port Townsend/Orcas/Whidbey/Seattle between now and New Years's- oh, wait, that's still 2005 touring plans!!!
2006, my dad and I might do a Seattle to Lake Superior ride. We're going to talk about it at Christmas.

I've just started riding again, but I'm hoping to tour the Black Forest of Germany some time in 2007 or 2008. Since I just started riding again, does anyone have any suggestions?

Today I drove a route to check out whether I want to ride it in the spring. It looks good! Wilkes-Bare to Selinsgrove and back
I have never done any touring, so I am looking to do a 2 day trip (one out and one back) of about 65 miles. If it works out, I hope to do Wilkes-Barre to the Boston area taking about a week or so (assuming I can successfuly map a route).
Along the way, I also plan to ride a couple of organized centuries.

Certainly not the entire length. I have cycled a few places here and there (Peterborough area in 1983, Trenton area in 1986 and in the early 1990s), and drove around the Georgian Bay area.
Basically, there are a few segments between lakes where there are 2-3 locks in a row and there is a tow path beside them. But for the rest, there is none. However, since a good chunk is in Southern Ontario, there are many side roads that are either along the waterway or not too far from it. The only worry I have is whether civilisation has encroached too much to make it a pleasant ride all the way.

Well, considering I am getting a divorce, and having to sell my house which will probably give me at least some spending money to play with, I think a bike tour this year is to be forecast. That would mean quitting my job, but I had no real plans on staying in Minnesota anyway, hard to ride fast in the snow you know.
As for plans, I have yet to figure that out. I think my idea is to just bum around on my bike as long as possible in as many places as possible. I am guessing I should be able to manage at least 3 months before I start to worry about going broke. I haven't ever been to Europe, seems like the natural place to start.
First thing first, I must buy a bike with a much longer wheelbase, all mine have that damn tight geometry typical of bikes not fit to carry a load.

So ... who has started on their touring adventures?
Have you made any changes to your plans since this was posted?
I mentioned I might be touring bits of BC, Alaska, the North American east coast, and California ..... but as it turns out, I've had to cut back on my travelling this year because of my education. I'm still planning on the North American east coast, but for the rest of the summer, I'm now planning to stay around Alberta. I'm still fairly new (again, after a 13 year absence) to this part of the world ... and I do have the Rocky Mountains practically on my doorstep, so I should be able to get some good riding in.
