pull a child trailer with a fixie?
Would it be possible/manageable to pull a child's bike trailer with a fixed gear bike? I have a Trek Transit Deluxe and am looking to purchase The Bike Fixie 1 from nashbar. My commute is 10 miles on a bike path and is relatively flat.
Thanks in advance.

I have done many miles on a fixy with a trailer. In town though. Works just fine.
Gears are useful here though. Any kind of hill or wind and you will miss a lower gear.

Has anybody carted their spawn on a fixed gear bike in one of these?
Don't let the Division of Youth and Family Services know about it, but I'm going to be attempting this soon. (of course, I'll do a bunch of trial runs before I actually put to the test with the grom aboard).

I used a trailer to transport my wee one back and forth, both on my fixed bikes and on my geared bikes. Just make sure your stopping distances are higher and you're more aware/prepared and you'll be fine. Not wanting a debate, but I'd strongly suggest you run a brake - the trailer I had could've been a good extra 80lbs once loaded up with sprogglett and accessories - that's a lot of extra momentum you need to be able to stop.
Kids love the ride, enjoy!

I want to see how it goes, and I am hopefull.....
The we-ride thing just looks horrible for the rider and the bike. Clamps on that thing look like they will scrape the paint right off my headtube:-)

I have one of these and my 18 month old (28 lbs) loves it. She asks to go for a ride every night.
Very soon I will start commuting to work with her.
p.s. Hirohsima, sorry I forgot to get back to you about the seat but it sounds like you found something. We should start a kids ride.

I did a 20 mile ride with my 6 year old on a trailer cycle with no problems. I have used a trailer cycle and a trailer at the same time to carry three kids on my fixed gear. Obviously with the three kid set up I was not geared properly to handle any kind of hill, but it worked just fine. Obviously you need a brake, but if you have offspring hopefully you have the sense to have one regardless.

I pull my boys in the trailer behind my fixed gears all the time. The two of them together weigh about 80 pounds, plus around 15-20 pounds for the trailer is an excellent workout. They love it, my legs kinda love it.

You help was invaluable (I don't want to sound unappreciative) but just decided to go a different rout (plus I am anal retentive and don't like chancing scratching up my bikes)......

If the latter, they make a mount for nutted axles, too. I pull a Burley flat-bed trailer on my fixed gear mounted this way.

I actually did this regularly last school year. It was only a 2 mile commute but it was really hilly and I actually was pulling a kid to and from school. At the time she weighed about 70lbs and my gearing was 45x19 which wasnt that great but I got the job done.

as far as burley trailers go - don't cheap out. get a nice one which has additional interior room, a mud-guard and most importantly, additional headroom behind the head to make room for helmeted children!

My kid (4.5 years old) graduated from the trailer to a trail-a-bike earlier this year. I pull him everyday (usually on a fixie) to daycare (2.5 miles), then leave the trailer (or trail-a-bike) with him and continue on to work. We do it all year round, even in the dead of winter, with snow. Kids love bikes and trailers!
