Oh my god...i've figured it out
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter found in many locations in the brain. It is responsible for a variety of actions but is most prominently known for its role in the human “reward system”. To be sure, this is not its only job but it is indeed one of the crucial neurotransmitters in what is collectively known as endorphins.
Endorphins are released for many reasons but one that we all know very well is during and continuing after physical activity, such as cycling. The effect of these endorphins is a sense of euphoria; many refer to this as the “runners high”. Personally, I think that is a mislabeling but I have yet to figure whom I need to take this up with.
Euphoria can be induced many other, more artificial ways. It is linked with the addictive properties of cocaine, alcohol, nicotine, amphetamines (including meth), and morphine/heroin and all other opioids. All of these drugs, though through somewhat different actions, massively increase dopamine levels in the brain. These dopamine levels are increased in many areas of the brain and can differ depending on the drug. The area of importance for this discussion, though, is the reward center, which without getting into too many details, is primarily located mid-brain.
Thus, both highly addictive drugs as well as endorphins create, through various mechanisms, an influx of dopamine in the reward center of our brain. The psychological effect of this physiological change is responsible for the sense of euphoria associated with the drugs and “runners” high (soon to be known as cyclists high). It is this euphoric property that is the root cause of the psychological addictions to these drugs. When we get high we get dopamine and we feel great. Thus the administration of drugs is not so much an addiction to drugs, but rather an addiction to the naturally occurring neurotransmitter Dopamine.
Neurotransmitters are often abbreviated for simplicity sake. The abbreviation for dopamine is DA. DA…where have I seen that before.
