Throw the stick!!!!
I would get my bike, just have to do without my Zipps. What can I say, I love my Fuji SL1, that's why I bought two of them.

My "$5,ooo road bike" is a CR1 bought for 30% off out of season. You could easily get that performance for $2,5oo today.
Which one? How the hell could I know? You don't specify any uses for the bike outside a very broad spectrum.

I would buy a nice $2,000 road bike and a nice $1,000 mountain bike and then buy a few really nice vintage bikes with the rest.

Raising the Abyss
If new, I 2nd the BMC or an Independent Fabrication.
If older, get a steel Merckx or Pinarello.

Vanilla Workshop Speedvagen. I am thinking of getting one from the 2008 batch. But I just bought custom Zipps and I need to kinda get married in 2 months. Priorities.

If that's the case, ignore the majority of suggestions so far.
Do yourself a favor: aim for a $2500 or so bike. Get the best deal you can, but don't pay anything more than that for the bicycle itself in total. It'll be far more than you'll need for a while, and you'll love the ride. Either save the rest of the money (recommended, crap economy) or apply the rest to a damn good &lightweight helmet, clothing/shoes/gear, tools, stand, etc:, and learn to love and value every aspect of cycling... including taking care of your ride.
That is all.

I have that already. Except my bike is 10 years old, and I have the means to spend some money on a new one. I do need a new pair of shoes though.....
That being said.....what would you get for 2500.00?

For less than 2500, you can get the CAAD9 frameset built up with ultegra/rival/centaur or whatever and a great set of wheels for race day and Open pros/ultegras for training.
Remember that if you're racing, you might end up crashing your ride and need to replace it. So buy a great ride (like the CAAD9) and save enough money to do it all over again if something happens.

Fine then - my answer for my needs
For $5000:
-A cervelo or Wiler top-end frame through phallenthoul ~or~ a top-end Cyfac using 1k CF
-Decked out, but intelligently chosen, components to make it sub 14lb (Mix of SRAM Red/Campagnolo, KCNC, Tune, Extralite, Alligator iLink, etc:.)
-Reynolds Wheelset (DV46 c or t most likely) if budget allows. If it doesn't, Wheels through Williams Cycling or Bike Soul.
Done.
I still stand by my original post though.

CAAD9 or rocky mountain solo scandium (probably even a cervelo dual or team solo) with full ultegra and some ksyrium SL wheels if it was $2500...

A trimble frame, with rigid carbon forks, campag record, drop bars, disc brakes and a pair of handbuilt 700c wheels probably with deep v rims.

My name is Scott, and I started cycling to overcome my drug addiction (it worked) so for personal reasons (and because it's a badass bike) i'd get a Scott Addict.
