Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

spinning music

I recently went through the certification process to teach spinning and am putting together some classes by "borrowing" some of Sally Edwards heart rate workouts, planning the moves (seated, standing, sprinting, etc) and then matching the music to the move. I've got one decent class completed although it has yet to be tried in front of a live studio audience. I've got warmup and cooldown music as well as some recovery music for between intervals, but I need recommendations for up-tempo stuff. Pop 70's-80's-90's suck. Disco sucks. I want some smart music. Here's what I'm using for the first class and here's what I'm thinking about incoporating into the next one;

In the books for the first class (up-tempo);
Radiohead - 15 steps
Jimmy - Voodoo Child
Incubus - Dig
Incubus - Anna Molly
Oakenfold - Ready, Steady, Go
Beck - E-pro
Chemical Brothers - The Boxer
Silver Sun Pickups - Well Thought Out Twinkles

Considering for the next class (up-tempo);
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
Daft Punk - Around the World
Daft Punk - Da Funk
Daft Punk - One More Time
Crystal Method - Keep Hope Alive
BodyRockers - I Like the Way You Move

... must have more music that people like that is not cheesy as hell ...

A bit of psychedelic trance never does me wrong on the rollers. Problem is, the tempos are usually between 145 and 150 bpm, which doesn't really sync up well to cycling cadences. Sort of obscure stuff... people tend to either love it or hate it. Just thought I'd throw it out there. Lately I've been listening to (click links for low-quality samples):

Kindzadza - Waves From Inner Space (dark, noisy)

Azax Syndrome - Evolution (dark, more melodic, #5 is a Slayer cover)

Slug - Elemental (lighter stuff)

If you're interested let me know. I can recommend more stuff and individual tracks.

i like a spin class with techno. trance is another thing. i can't even dance to it. its either too fast or the vocals, beat, and bassline are too intertwined that i find it hard to connect with a drum kick....

while, for the most part, you've got good taste in music, it's a tad too guitar for spinning.

I used a lot of the time spent looking for a bike to put together a good playlist for the bike at gym and the trainer; I think it was the first page I got up on my MS150 website...

I think there's a reasonable mix up upbeat and lower tempo, I don't have any DVDs or training programs, so I just stick the walkman on random and use the tempo of whatever appears as my interval. A short sampler follows, but the playlist in progress is on the website (link in sig.) any suggestions are welcome!

Dodge City Rockers- Fort Knox Five
Mylowdowndirty- Soul of Man
Crooked (Bassbin Twins Mix)- Evil Nine
Jetstream (Album Version)- New Order
Grip Like a Vice- The Go! Team
Break Em On Down- Soledad Brothers
Begging You- The Stone Roses
Yes Sir, I Can Hardcore (M Mayer Mix)- Ferenc
Cowgirl- Underworld

Threads like this make me feel old...

The Who, The Clash and Vivaldi are my staples

I remember someone posting a link to freeware that checks the tempo of the songs in your itunes but it was Apple only. Does anyone know if there is a windows version?

What? No polka? Italian Opera? Bee bop jazz? Don't play music that gets you in the mood to hammer, play music that makes you want to get out of the room as fast as possible. Trigger the "fight or flight" reflex and watch those students try to pedal their way out of there on their stationary bikes. Bwaahhh hahh hahhh </evil laugh>

(okay, I love Opera and Jazz so in that class I'd be the guy groovin in the back of the room).

If you do a search for 'bpm counter' you can find a few. Depending on how you want to do it, there are several where you can just tap a key in time and it will tell you the bpm or some will analyze an mp3. For those who want a more bespoke mix, import the songs into Ableton Live, string them together and you can control the tempo.

Pretty much anything you hear in a strip club is good to go for a spin class.

There is no such thing as too much guitar.

As far as Ska, Suicide Machines. I guess I just like a good blend of mellow for cool down and something that pounds and rocks for intervals. But I guess I could see where some folks might not dig on it.
