Looks like a 1989 model. Look closely at the head badge for four small, lightly stamped numbers. They represent the build date. The first three digits are the Julian date (1-365) and the last digit is the last digit of the year (that would be a 9 if the bike was assembled in 1989).

1989 Schwinn World Sport catalog page.

I have an 88 I got for $25 this summer and I love it. I've put a few thousand miles on it and it rides, shifts and brakes great.

I'm picking it up tomorrow for $20. Seems fair. Fixing it up for the wife. She needs a big frame (no pun intended).

Here is my 83 before the new fork and front brake was installed. Most of the schwinn branding on it had flaked off, so I finished the job and cleaned it up. It is my commuter. I put on north road bars and removed the front derauiller. Its a great bike for little money.

Thanks.

The number on the badge says 0099. So I translate this to January 9, 1989.

Pretty cool bike.

Does anyone know if the saddle can be recovered (it has a small hole)?

Also is there a general checklist of refurbishing a bike like this? I don't want to miss anything.

Any recommendations on chrome cleaner? I have been using Noxon.

Just replace the saddle. It's probably not worth the effort and your wife won't find it very comfortable.

Do you have a bike co-op nearby? They can help you with this project. Adjust the brakes, replace cables if needed, brake shoes if needed. Grease the bearings in the wheels, headset and bottom bracket, unlessed they are sealed bearings.

For chrome use bronze wool. For aluminum use Blue Magic, Mothers, Semi Chrome, etc.

Good luck and welcome.

Thanks for the welcome Rev.

No co-op nearby that I know of (northern NJ).

So, I have a couple of books as reference (Zinn, Cuthbertson).

Thanks for the list.

*rubs hands together in anticipation*

Thats an excellent price for that bike anywhere, but in North Jersey, that's outstanding. Around here (North Carolina), any index shifting road bike in good condition with good tires brings in $100 minimum, usually more. You can afford to put some money into that bike and still be way ahead.
