ok.. ok .. ok.. I was just out skidding around and I noticed some interesting play in the drive line.. When I would skid I could feel the chain 'skip' one way; and after that when I mashed it would go the other..

I'm running formula hubs with a surly cog and a crappy stamped lockring.. I tightened that lockring as well as I could reasonably do a couple times after mashing on the pedals.. I just took the lockring off to inspect the threads and nothing looks damaged.. Tomorrow to dura-ace...

What you did wrong was cheap out of the lockring. It's been said a thousand times here before, doesn't skimp on that or the cog.

how obvious, but true. Yah, I just reused this thing that came with my Langster, been meaning to replace it but haven't.

OK. So what is the best practice for installing the cog/lockring?? I'm not having much luck with the search on this topic

Surly's instructions

Just as I did:

1. grease & install cog
2. grease & install lockring
3. ride; then check lockring

I wonder if the lockring just wasn't tight or something.. sigh.. fingers crossed that when I put the dura-ace on there things work out better..

(for all this make sure you have a brake)
thread cog on (with grease!)
ride up a hill and mash really hard
make sure you put no back pressure riding back home
have a lockring tool
reverse thread lockring on (with grease!)
tighten really good with a non stamped lockring

Yeah.. I did all that except my lockring is a POS stamped one. .. I'm pretty sure the hub is fine, and after thinking about it some that the explanation is that the lockring just wasn't tight enough when the cog was tight too.. tomorrow to dura-ace

yea i had a stamped lockring strip on me while i tightened it once. it was some serious junk i should have never even thought about using. you will be fine once you get the DA
