Bikes: Peugeot Ventoux

Bought a new toy off eBay...

Hello all.

Well, my Peugeot Ventoux bit the dust. Whoever put the handlebars on last time screwed the thread on the forks, and when I factored in the price of new forks and a respray, I decided to go bargain hunting on eBay. The result? I ended up winning an auction for a Peugeot PE30 in eye-hurting yellow, which arrived yesterday. I only intend to use it for commuting to work, and then later possibly getting back out on the road proper.

What I wanted to do was check if the spec was any good, and the replaceability (is that a word?) of the bits. That, and when it was made etc as I can't seem to find owt on the web anywhere..

It proclaims itself to be:

Columbus tubing frame
ITM Big One stem
ITM Super Racing 330 bars
Shimano RSX STI shifters (the right one doesn't seem to click as well as the left)
Rigida "Ultimate Power" rims
Conti Duraskin +K tyres
Olfmega(?) cranks
And the old pedals off my old peugeot as the bloke wanted extra for his clipless ones.

Anyone know anything about this bike and if it's any good? Seems to be quite light, and goes pretty quick... But as a newbie, I don't really know any more than that (all the info I have is off stickers etc)... HEYULP!

Bikes: Many

Your bike is probably on the fringe of being too new for much information in this forum. However, there are some that may be along shortly to help.

For age, you may be able to check the date codes on components with information from VintageTrek.com

Based on RSX STI I would think early to mid 90's, but that is just a wild guess based on the fact that down tube, stem shifters and some barcons were still the norm for late 80's bikes I have seen.

It does not sound like a model ever sold in America. Which ebay did you get it through? ebay.fr, .fr, .nl?

Have any pictures? Columbus tubing is pretty top of the line so it sounds like its gotta be a good bike (plus its yellow!).

Sounds like its maybe from the 90s if the shifting is indexed as you say.

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

SWEET! I would definitely say early 90's based on the shifters and rims.

I'm pretty happy with it. It was £58GBP which is about $100-$120US I think. Even though it's not a light as a fart affair, I like it..

Wow, I like it... Its more modern than vintage I would say, but you did very well for that price.. I didnt think it was possible to buy a bike like that so cheap.

Great find! Keep that puppy nice and in 20 or so years it may be worth a fortune.

How light do you want a bike to be for $100? nice score.

replacing brifters can be a dicey and/or expensive affair. Shimano Sora 7 or 8 speed brifters will run you $120-150 new. I wouldn't buy used brifters if they looked the least bit damaged, as they're somewhat delicate. Finding parts should be easy for that bike, but as with all nice bikes, replacing bits for retail price isn't cheap. You should be able to find bargains on most stuff, as your parts are older (but not yet vintage) and mid-line.
