Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

carpet fiber seatpost for $39.95 ?

Nashbar is selling 27.2mm x 350mm 2-bolt micro-adjust seatposts for forty bucks. I really need a micro adjustable seatpost and the price is good even if it were an aluminum post.

What are your thoughts?

I don't think carpet fibers would make a very good seat post.

It's probably carbon-wrapped AL.

It's carbon fiber.

I loves me some carbon forks, and it's great for fishing rods and golf club shafts.... but I feel a little funny sitting on it, nome sane?

The ad copy reads,

Our infinitely adjustable 2-bolt head makes precise saddle adjustments a breeze. At just 229g our carbon fiber seatpost compares to posts that cost $100 or more. High gloss carbon finish with silver logo and fine graduation marks on the front side. 27.2mm only. 229g

A good, solid CF seatpost will last just as long as AL. But don't let the price fool you. You're not getting the same level of quality as a $40 Al seatpost. CF is just more expensive, so think of this as a $10 Al post.

When it comes to CF I personally prefer to buy it from a company that has a strong reputation for CF parts, like Easton/Campagnolo/etc. Maybe it's a personal paranoia thing, but it's what I do.

I also find it sort of funny that they advertise the "high-gloss carbon finish" like it's a good thing. Glossy clearcoat is prone to slippage. Don't forget to buy your Tacx carbon assembly paste!

Agreed, DrPete.

The clamp on the Nashbar seatpost looks pretty good for a $10 post, though, and at 229g there ought to be enough beef in it.

Yeah but the funny thing is that $10 AL post will work just as well as a $100 AL post, besides the weight.

Yes CF as a material is more expensive, but since when did the material cost have much to do with the end price of the component? The CF shaft probably cost about $5, and took 1 minute to assemble using some glue and hand tools, whereas the Aluminum shaft cost of $1 and used a customised spot welding machine or precision lathe and press to assmble it. Then you add on a few layers of margin, shipping, overheads and taxes... and the justifiable cost difference (i.e. ex. marketing and hot air) between the carbon and al version is much smaller than you would think.

CF as a material isn't all that expensive. You can buy yards of the stuff from airplane manufacturers quite cheaply. It's the manufacturing and labor that gets expensive.

Heck, I got the cheap Ascent carbon post (not wrapped) for $25 from Nashbar.

You know what it is?

It is an FSA SLK carbon seatpost. Yup, that's right. It is the exact same post, only rebadge with a little Ascent logo. It's 350mm, and about 250g. It is a little heavy, but you can knock it down to about 200g if you hack off several inches (if not needed). I've had it for over a year. No problems what so ever.

Some carbon posts really are better, some aren't. You just have to shop around, read reviews, and know what you're getting. The same goes for carbon frames. Some cheaper frames are really good for the price, like the Pedal Force RS (ADK in origin). And, some are not so good.

Believe it or not, alot of it also has to do with the decals. I discovered this with my handlebars. I got the Trigon integrated bars for $200 from Chucks Bikes. Yet, When 4ZA sells them under their name, they cost $500.

Now, those are pricey decals.

That said, there's nothing wrong with the Nashbar post. At least in review or actual mention of use that I have read. I also think the Pedal Force seatpost is a great post for the money.

Carbon fibre is a marketing scheme. The fibre part is useless, all of the strength comes from the layering of sheets of carbon. True carbon parts really don't look that nice so I guess they decided to pretty them up with a layer of fibre. We are all suckers.

Fiber's stronger than carbon sponge. I wouldn't recommend riding on a stick of charcoal. Besides, the fiber keeps ya regular

You say that like you actually believe the claimed weight.

I oughta buy it just to weigh it. It's a good deal on a micro adjust seatpost, carbon or not. Yeah, I could get a perfectly good Salsa post for the same money...

I was considering this seatpost too. Are there other micro-adjust seatposts people recommend, other than this nashbar one?

Sure. For the same money you could get an IRD or Salsa. Both are aluminum.
