Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

He spent $700 on it and thinks he got a good deal. What, do Deep Vs cost that much nowadays? Or maybe that was in addition to $600 worth of spray-paint cans.

There's little sacrifice. Weight only becomes a major concern when you're going uphill, whereas aerodynamics becomes a concern whenever you're not drafting someone (which if you like winning, is somewhat often).

What I'm curious about is the disc wheel phenomenon. Every track racer worth a lick uses them, but does the aerodynamic advantage really make up for the poor acceleration? Greater rotating mass means greater MOI, but if the drag coefficient is effected enough, it would justify the extra weight.

I'm going to run the math on this and answer my own damn question.
