Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Any clips on the web anywhere -- no handbrake stop?

Does anyone have a link or know where I can see what it looks like to stop by taking weight off the rear tire and locking it up? I am going to have my fixed out here in a month or so, and it isn't drilled for brakes, so I want to watch a pro for a while to get it in my mind, before I go out an practice.

Or a video showing ways to stop. I have read good tips on it, but it would be nice to see.

Thanks,
Curt

Search forum for skids and skids stop. You will have enough clips/advice to last you an entire afternoon.

did a search for skid and came up with nothing. I guess I will just keep searching. Maybe youtube has something? I have seen someone around here that does it, but it would be nice to see it a few times on here. Wish there was a web site dedicated to riding fixed bikes that was helpful.

Yes. I bought most of the components off someone here on the forum. Hope I don't scratch it up learning how to skid.

Not too worried about it really. Been riding forever. Just not without a brake. I'll post pictures of it when it is done. Should be pretty cool. Can't believe how light this bike is going to be.

Nice ride man. What are you riding? Must be a Cinelli or something.

Famous last words.

Seriously, don't even think of venturing out into traffic and/or riding faster than 10mph until you have it dialed in. It's not as easy as you think.

no, not to stop don't. balls on stem=unweighted rear wheel=less stopping power...

try it my way and try it theirs. see which one helps you learn how to skid.

when you can easily lock up the wheel, start shifting your weight backward to decrease your stopping distance. then try hockey stops and little skips with your weight all the way back.

then as soon as you've got that down go on the internet and start calling people out...

+1. I thought i'd break something if I locked my wheel sitting down, I had to work up to it from balls on stem to balls on seat.

Now I call people out all the time like, 'yo, sucka'

Yeah, I won't go out into traffic in the first half hour or so until I get the feel of it. I am not in that big of a rush on it.

Your task at hand is to zip down Canton Ave (36% grade) which probably looks something like this around this time of year:

If you manage to stop, you have reached either the house at the other side of the street or the zen of fixed gear riding.

^ ^ ^ That hill seems like it'd be insanely fun with a fixed mtn bike... topped up with a nice skidded turn where the snow meets the road..
