I'll be there! Look for me with a greenish mountain bike, light blue helmet, two blinkies on the front with yellow bar end tape.

Jyo,
Do the CP rides just go around the park, or elsewhere?

The ride stays in the park, but is conducted mostly on the walking paths and trails, not the big road loop. It's definitely not a training ride, but more like a relaxed social ride in the dark on paths you normally wouldn't ride on during the day.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, as much as I'd love to try this someday, I'm trying to figure out the logistics of it. Friends of the family have an apt. in Manhattan on 50th and 9th, which I could stay at, but getting my bike up to Central Park would be a bit of a challenge since I've:

1. Never ridden in a city before
2. Don't know where the hell I'm going

Ah well....

Here's easy step by step instructions:

1) PM me
2) Take MetroNorth to Grand Central arriving before 9:30.
3) I'll meet you at Grand Central
4) Go for ride!

It's OK - we have streets here too!

You want me to take my bike on the train from CT to NYC? Ehhhhhhhhh.....

As far as riding in the city, I'd just be worried about getting creamed by some cabbie, truck driver, bus, out-of-state tourist, or anyone not paying attention. I'm sure it's probably not that bad if you're used to it, but I live in a pretty rural area, and while I ride on main roads with a lot of traffic, it's nowhere on the radar compared to NYC. I guess if I had someone to ride with/follow throughout the city, that wouldn't be too bad.

Why not? I do it all the time on LIRR - same $5 pass is good for life! As for getting creamed by a cabbie - there are many people here that ride all over the city and haven't gotten nailed. A few others who have, but I almost broke my neck falling down a flight of stairs once. I still walk up and down stairs despite the eminent dangers involved

We're talking nine city blocks from your friend's apartment to West 59th Street. Even the carriage horses can do it with their blinkers on There's even a bike lane that runs up Eighth Avenue. What more could you ask for? Maybe a Pedicab escort?

I was just looking at that last night - I didn't realize Central Park was so close, actually....

A bunch of us are going to NYC Saturday morning, so Friday is out .

GW, That part of the city is chock full of Tourists this time of year. You'll feel right at home! Seriously, riding in the city is no big deal. Just take your time & have fun. No, it's nothing like riding in a rural area. Just be prepared to do a fair amount of trackstands or clipping & unclipping.

Gaahhh!!! I should've brought my camera and mtb. We stopped at Belvedere Castle and the pond and both were picture postcard beautiful. Plus we did a little off-roading which is where the mtb would've came in handy.
