Widest tire on an Open Pro ??

How wide a tire can I safely put on an Open Pro rim? I'm guessing 32, but hoping for 35. General purpose, utility use including commuting and general dinking around.

I've run 2.35" tires on rims narrower than an Open Pro (Matrix Mt. Titan, a rolled-down version of an Iso-C II). I'd go for the 35's without a second thought.

I run 35's and 42's on an MA3, same width as an Open Pro.

My wife has been using 35s (which really measure 35mm) on Open Pros for several years with no problems.

I have a huge set of Specialized 32's on mine. They are so big the look more like a 35. So far, they work great. It is a heavy wheel but man is it a smooth ride. Good luck

Open Pros are favorite cyclocross rims and are typically fitted with 35 and 37 mm CX tires.

I'm running Mich. Jet 700-30 cross tires on CXP-33s. The CXP33s have just about the same width as the Open Pros. These 700-30s are wider than most 700-35s. (So much for standards!) I would feel safe doing what as you wish.

According to https://sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html#width, you shouldn't really go over 32 on an open pro (15 mm width).

But the main problem with going slightly over isn't any kind of catastrophic failure, it's that the edges of the tire will be "squirmy" from bulging over the rims... this is common on mountain bikes as Sheldon's page points out. If it seems to work okay, then go for it.

I've got a set of IRC Mythos CX 700x42 on my CXP33

Typically the frame is a bigger limiting factior, for example the rims on my MTB are 19mm wide, and currently hold a 53mm (2.1") tire, however one thing to remember, the wider the tire, the lower the pressure, so if your running 8 bar in your 28s, you might want to be 7 bar in a 32 and 6,5 bar in 35s. Of course some of this depends on the tires as well, if your tire is limited to 6 bar, then you want to run at 6 bar, even though the rim can handle 6,5 bar. Now I have the opposite problem, I am switching to narrower tire, probably a 35mm, which means I can gain some pressure, and can probably run at 6 - 6,5 bar without damaging the rims.

Now the frame, some frames, are designed for a certain tire limit, and going to a wider tire, will cause it to rub on the stays or the brakes. I would say make sure you have at least 2mm on either side preferably 4mm and the same for the brake and chain stay bridges although you want more like 8mm of room there.
