Did a relaxing recreational ride on a mountain bike today. As beautiful as Vancouver is, I can't wait to get back home just to hop back on the road bike again!

Only 19 miles today but it was on the road. Road was damp but it wasn't raining, odd. 59F and cloudy here in Maryland today which was unusually warm considering the last 2-3 weeks have been so cold (5-8F below normal) and I've been hitting the trails in the woods.
I couldn't believe how nice it felt just to have the bib shorts on with no extra heavy layer over them. Just a short sleeve jersey with a mid-weight long sleeve over top.

Cool snowshoe hike. I used to do that when we lived in CO. Lots of fun.
Rode the New Year's Brevet with Lone Star Randonneurs today. Bit cold, a bit windy, but made it in. Rode to Willie's place at Carl's Corner, squished a penny, rode back.

My ride was about 24 miles with temps at -2F. Fresh inch or so of snow last night so the roads were messy again. Wet main road, slushy or snow covered secondary roads. But no freeze up of the RD today despite growing a good coat of ice on it. Face mask of my balaclava
froze up around my mouth from my breath along with the thumb on the hand I kept using to adjust the face piece. But basically I was quite comfortable, the Fox Wear jacket really works great at keeping my warm while cutting the wind and breathes really well. Ride took close to 2 hours since I'm on a heavy old mountain bike equipped with studded snow tires and fenders. Had the tires at around 40 psi to give me traction on all the slippery stuff. Water bottle froze up by the end of the ride and my GPS's batteries gave in to the cold at about mile 18. Oh and one dog ambush, love those as they always give me a chance to work on my sprinting! All and all a great ride and so much better than sitting on the trainer.

a real pisser. I was psyched to do a half or maybe metric century with the temp in the 50s for once...
but when I got to my riding buddy's house, he was all let's-go-hit-the-rail-trail-i'm-nervous-about-riding-with-cars-and-plowed-snow
after trying to talk him out of it -- the MUPs won't be plowed! -- I finally relented. so we drove another half hour to the rail trail.
of course the MUP wasn't plowed very well, but we tried it...with road bikes. kept sliding and almost fell over a couple of times. I finally insisted on turning around.
16.5 miles at an average speed of 9 mph, on what could have been a SENSATIONAL riding day. I was out of my mind perturbed...

42 miles on wet roads with little traffic. Fantastic ride. Faster than usual (but still way slow, of course), so I'm off to a good start for the year. I'd love to ride again today, but we'll see how the snow forecast holds up.
Any winter riding around here is a bonus. This year I'm focused on dialing in my winter riding gear and bike cleaning technique so that I can ride more and do it more comfortably. Californ-i-a sure looks good, though--even with the ice in the desert.

120 minutes of indoor training.
No fun.
Only another 17,880 minutes to reach 300 hours.

We were not part of an organized ride. My wife and I do this ride often. It's an easy 47-miler from the apartment. The SDBC folks were pretty much occupying the entire place when we got there. Always nice folks to hang out with.
