You do realize that some of Petersen's later Bridgestones came with STIs either stock or as an option, right?

I'm guessing most would consider a 29- or 30-year-old RB-1 to be "C&V".

Ild consider almost any downtube shifting bike as C&V including indexed but STI or Brifters for the most part are not.
You should go outside and go for a bike ride, get some fresh air. don't forget to bring a multi "TOOL".

I begin to wonder if anyone got that SurferRosa's line was also articulated in justice Potter Stuart's statement about hard core pornography in Jacobellis v. Ohio.

Yeah I own 2 RB1s and 1 RB2 thanks smart guy.... only reason there's STIs on Bridgestones is because he didn't own the Company. At Rivendall there's no STI shifters.

classic and or vintage
I'm enjoying this thread and hope to one day being able to share a picture of my 73 or 74 Raleigh Competition. I'm pretty sure it would considered vintage and I hope it's a classic!

C&V bikes are based on the timeless simplicity of C&V tech. Like the beauty of two nuts locked together on a threaded bolt. I mean, that's just how a C&V bike works.

In America, 1992 is the dividing line between vintage and modern. In 1992 the old Schwinn company declared bankruptcy.
Before 1992 we saw the original bike boom and the blossoming of the sport into subgenres like mountain, BMX, touring, etc. Tom Shaddox's incredible article about the Schwinn Varsity describes the meteoric rise of cycling's popularity during that vintage era, supported by bikes produced in huge numbers at a decent level of quality.
After 1992 we've seen waves of new technologies: brifters, carbon fiber, disc brakes. These technologies, along with the rise of economic inequality, have driven stratification between the high-end of $5000 bikes and the low end of "BSOs."

Yes I like bikes built before 1992 myself. I also like lugged frames, gum wall tires, and absolutely nothing anodized black. Aluminum just looks right when it has a polish.
Frosts my hide that Trek put black rims on my pristine bright red 1988 Trek 400.

For my two cents.... I think a classic has the "spirit" of a classic design. I think vintage is one or two generations away from the current state of the art.......
Acoustic Guitars Before 1980 Are there classic acoustic guitars built today? sure. Can a 20 yer old guitar be vintage, I don't think so....
Cars: 25 Years or more. Is an E-Type vintage? Yes. Is it a classic? You betcha! Is a first-gen Miata vintage? Yes. Is it a classic? I think so, because it hearkens back to old sports cars and has their spirit. Is a Pinto vintage? Yes. Is it a classic? Um.... no!
Cameras: Is a Leica M6 vintage? No. Is it a classic? Most definitely!
Bikes: Is a Serotta Colorado decked out with Campy Record vintage? Yes. Is it a classic? Yes. Is a 1990 Trek 2100 with 105 vintage? Yes. Is it a classic? Maybe.... Is a 2010 Rivendell vintage? No. Is it a classic? I think so....

No thanks. Way too restrictive. As Groucho Marx stated, I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.

I tend to agree here. For me, it's about a nicely built steel bike with tasteful lugs and paint. It's about nice for-the-most-part aluminum alloy parts and conventional well built wheels. I'll confess to having a TIG, though quill, stem for rigidity sake and I quite like my Ergo 10 brifters, but my bikes are still very much in a classical mold. I think the big watershed is the point where bicycles started to look principally like technology products rather than crafted items. The sad thing is the the groups from the major makers and common wheelsets disfigure a well crafted steel frame. (E.g. a modern Campy crank on a Richard Sachs frame.)

I couldn't agree more. I've seen some examples of simply stunning lugged steel frames with classic design have their classic beauty destroyed by the use of modern "Batmobile" components. A real travesty, IMO.

So my 1989 Cinelli Supercorsa with downtube shifters, lugged construction, Columbus SLX tubing, not an ounce of carbon fiber and horizontal dropouts wouldn't be considered?

Just post it if it has two wheels. You don't need anyone's blessing to make a post.
