A rotor below the minimum thickness after the first set of pads is what I'm talking about. The first time I saw that on a VW I was stunned. Many years ago, of course.
I'm pretty certain I have never replaced a rotor on any car I've had but I think I did replace a drum once on an old truck. Sold my S-10 with near 300k and original rotors and drums. Current beater has 200K and has had front pads once, no rotors or rear pads yet. It helps that I drive like a scared old lady.

Trying not to buy this beauty they're asking $200 for, but I need another midrange bike like I need a hole in my head. But I've always loved this paint. I wish they would've done a Fuji Team with this finish.

I did brakes on used cars at a dealer in the 90s. The weirdest thing I found was certain Ford trucks had bad heat treating or something in the rotors. I could resurface them and they were well within spec and after the were driven a short time they would pulsate and shake the steering wheel something fierce. I learned to just replace them, and they were the big 8 lug rotors. Had a lady who bought a used Ford come into the shop and yell at me about it before I knew the problem. All kinds of accusations were hurled. We did buy her new rotors but she was not happy. Probably still not happy.

But have you ever looked into the possible advantages of a hole in the head? Also, what is this "need" ****?

You might be able to see the front pads without removing the wheel. Sometimes you can see the outer pad just looking through the wheel. With some cars you can get a small mirror in position to see both pads.
fwiw my friend put brakes on his Fit for the first time around 165,000 miles but he does a lot of freeway driving.

BTW I drive the Saturn like a middle aged man, very gently. I am thinking that's how I have 196K on it and still original clutch. But hands at 3 and 9 O'Clock.
