Some lock advice from a locksmith

I've got to agree with Scratch on this one. It makes no sense at all to use an ultra secure padlock with a very insecure and easily to snip cable. What's the rationalization behind this odd locking combo?

first page he said use a chain if you dont mind the weight...
the logic is to spend more than 10 bucks at home depot (hardware superstore) on a padlock if you are going to use one.
would you be more open to a NY messenger recommending the same padlock?

Personally, I love this thread for one reason: someone linked to Sheldon's rear wheel u-lock technique. I've been reading his site for years and never noticed it. So obvious I even had to stare at it for five minutes and read it twice before I wrapped my head around it.

Another bump, in light of some more recent events... and a question: what do you guys think about "Bicycle Security Alarms"? There's this, for example.

Antarctica awaits
WD-40 is a water displacement product. It is used as a cleaner, not a lubricant. When it dries, it will also attract particulates, gunking up your lock. It SHOULD be used on OLD, gunky, rusty, cruddy locks to clean them out. Spray some into the keyway and all moving parts. Wait 5 minutes or so and wipe as much out as you can. Wait as long as you can to let it dry out, and apply a teflon lubricant.

Just need to double check; how safe are barrel type locks (larger than kryptonite size)?
I recently bought a NOS bike club (same company that makes "the club" for cars) compact, that's pretty beefy, at a garage sale for $1; and I was hoping to use this to accompany my krypto mini [the krypto gets the frame and rear wheel; bikeclub gets the front and downtube]

If you are referring to barrel or "tubular" keyed locks, they are quite vulnerable to being picked open or easily drilled out.
Example of an ACE style "tubular" key:

never ever ever use a Master Lock no.3 to lock up your bike. I am a total noob and can pick it in well under a minute.
My dad was using that to lock up his bike along with a pretty beefy chain.

Yea it does have tubular lock; I guess I'll use the lock only in conjunction with my mini LS (the krypto being the pivotal lock and it being the latter)
Same here; all I need is a empty beer or soda can. But that's as far as I'm going to say.

incidentally, yunno what i would like? a smaller mini that would be just big enough to lock the rear wheel to the frame via the seat stays. that way you could use a short but robust chain (perhaps a "noose" type)to lock front wheel and frame to the parking meter, and then manage the other wheel with the tiny U.
get to work on that kryptonite. you could sell it as the total package, all keyed alike.
