If you want a reliable car I wouldn't get a mini cooper.

I have a bunch of friends who love theirs. However, my wife's started having issues right at the end of the warranty. Expensive stuff started to go and we off loaded it for a subaru.

it's a tiny car and I'm tall. apparently the rear-facing seats take up more space than is left with the front seats all the way back.

Just a bit. When we were car shopping for our first car (after living car free for a number of years), we drove salesmen mad when we kept asking for more rear seat legroom. They kept saying, :this is as much as you get and there's plenty of space for an adult back here, why do you want more?" With my wife and I both over 6' rear-facing car seats have been a pain. I'll be glad when our youngest graduates to forward facing (he just turned 1 2 weeks ago, but is like 30 lbs/32 inches tall and wears size 5 diapers and 2T clothes).

I vote also for a minivan. My wife refuses to get one as they apparently have 90's soccer mom connotations with her (and, I guess that's a bad thing?), but I'd happily drive one when we buy our second car this fall if I can't find something more fuel efficient (unfortunately, no room in the budget for a Model S) and my suggestion of a motorcycle keeps getting shot down.

Soccer mom vans score maximum points for utility, but are expensive and mpg sucks. Everyone always wants to ride in our van though.

The new Odyssey's are expensive, my brother just got one and said you can option it up to like $48k, but I think that includes the vacuum cleaner, heated seats and a mistress.

my wife is 38 years old. we have amnios scheduled and so far everything is good but she is 38 years old. As much as I don't want twins I really don't want anything to go wrong, but I'm couching language to avoid the jynx anyway.

Fudgy, at 38 the numbers are well in your favor. Best of luck to all four of you.

I agree. My wife and I have no intention of ever having children, but I still want to get an older minivan as a third car just for hauling bikes and going to races.

And yes, minivans can be very expensive. I think a fully optioned Toyota Sienna gets up to $55k

This is why we decided to get an Odyssey. If you just had a singleton, the seat goes in the center and you could probably get the driver seat back far enough. With twins, each goes next to the window and it is impossible to get the seat back. Especially if it is a stickshift car.

Ygduf, my wife was 39 when we had our twins. Full term, no drama until the end which was quite dramatic, long story.

Good luck to both of you!

My wife was also 39 when the kids were born. We were at the Ob/Gyn for one of her early appointments and I noticed that her chart had "AMA" on top. I thought, wow maybe we're a test case or something for the American Medical Association. Nope. AMA stands for advanced maternal age.

The crazy thing is how many racers I know who are parents of twins. There are 4 sets of twins just on my team.

Is a lot of that due to the increase in the use of fertility drugs? My cousin had two sets of twins.
