Just asked my coach to increase the intensity/load big time for the next 5 weeks.
Forced time off for work travel in the middle will keep me from burning out.
Two weeks of work travel (no bike) starting Nov 5th will give me a reason to stick to the plan until then.
The 2-weeks off will be good for a recharge, then hopefully doing some good work through February.
Today: 2x10m @ 100% - Easy Peasy

fixed. but 48-21 (used to be 48-16 but theres a 20mph block headwind every day on the way home so i switched it to not have to grind along at 60rpm all the time). IMO fixed is a bit better with a bad wrist because i can get some braking power/more control with my legs than just with my arms.
driving is fine if i shift hours (which i can do pretty easily), and even at its worst we're only talking about like 20-25 minutes (compared to 7 with no traffic), but i like the consistency and freedom of the 12 minute bike commute. plus i get to bike.

Wasn't really training, but I climbed a 10,000 foot volcano on Maui on Monday. No power meter, went out at a pace I could sustain i thought, then the air disappeared somewhere between 7000 and 8000 feet. I was happy to have 34x32 for that last bit. Descent was mostly better than last time I climbed Haleakala a couple years ago. Warm and no dense clouds. But it did randomly pour so many buckets that I could hardly see for 15 minutes or so toward the bottom. Luckily that stretch didn't have any hairpin turns and I could keep the speed high enough to keep cars from zipping by. And it was super hot in Paia, so it was pretty nice to be drenched at the bottom.
Not being able to fall asleep on a 5 hour red eye flight after a 5 hour bike ride really sucks.
CTL down to 70. Gonna try and get it up to 85 before 2 weeks in Thailand in November.

IOW, it's not unusual for things to start kicking in around that elevation, and not only are you acclimated to sea level you also RODE FROM sea level that day!
for someone not acclimated, you have the average person's power drops by 11% @ 6k; by 10k it's a 21% decline.

i live at 6,200' and routinely ride between 6 & 8. i'll often do some 20' intervals that take me above 8,000, and in the span of an interval i can feel a difference.

My ATL crossed my TSB today. CTL sitting at 69 after almost 3 weeks of no road bike and very unstructured riding. Not counting running into the PMC numbers because too complicated and not really sure where my running fitness is tbh.
Nothing of note today or yesterday (or tomorrow). Besides drinking too many beers yesterday, weighing myself to a big disappointment this morning and then getting a nasty headache at work since I'm sleep deprived. Haven't had more than 6 hours of sleep in a night in ~2 weeks. Wooo.
Too busy with travel and prep for more travel, recently. Picking up my brother at the airport tomorrow for 3 days of mountain biking in Moab. First time I will have seen him since I moved out here in June.
Super excited. The riding is a part of an event called Outerbike where they provide us with Demos and shuttles and such. Looking forward to trying out some real nice mountain bikes and getting a kick start to base training in a fun way. Probably not going to catch back up on sleep this weekend, but I'm sure I will soon enough!

Nice ride @aaronmcd! We visited Maui last year and I was in love with the tropical climate and how dynamic the ecosystems are near the edge of the windward and leeward sides. My GF's sister lived in Kaanapali, just north of Lahaina.
In addition to riding the volcano, doing a loop around West Maui is also def. a bucket list ride.

Since starting to ride more (finally) I've been getting some good sensations. Yesterday morning I piloted a new ~2 hr MTB commute that is a mix of roads and trail. On the way home I rode straight back (40 min) on the road and really smashed a few sections - wish I would have had a PM for the I-15 bike path. I felt great.
All this after a successful Laguna MTB weekend. Friday I rode 3 hrs on the road in the AM, with another 90 min in the mountain meadows PM. Saturday was the typical Noble Canyon run with a climb back up on the hwy - 90 min of mostly climbing.
Things are going to stay more or less put between now and my Sierra backpacking trip in two weekends. Then after that it's on!

Apparently TKP got stung by one of these death from above things today. I saw some weird white and black caterpillars on the road, maybe it was one of those. It's like an end times deal.
And just now I was tearing down the hill I live on when right at the fastest, blindest part of the descent, surprise! A dozen turkeys in the middle of the road. Half of them ran toward me and half of them ran away. I made an unfamiliar sound which was maybe like a bunny caught in a bear trap.

This still fricking hurts. On the plus side it reacts to hot water the same way as poison ivy so I've been taking really long showers which is concerning to my wife.

At about 5500 feet on Mount Washington my HR spiked to 180 and I had to back off. Power was on target, all systems were go. Elevation had other things on mind.

went out on my cross bike for a bit, just rode the bike path since no one was out. just finished a zwift race, 223 AP/227 NP for 50mins. it's fun to do the races, but the adrenaline or whatever seriously messes with my HR, it's like constantly above 160 for me (avg 163 actually), when doing stuff up to 94% on trainerroad usually keeps me in the 150 range.

at Everest Challenge from sea level, at 175lbs riding from 4k to ~10k 6 times over 2 days was like having my lungs pulled out with a plumbing snake. I began a slow decline in performance each time, especially above 7500ft.
