1974 Raleigh International. Fenders are helpful for bad weather.
1975 Viscount converted to fixed gear. Not much to go wrong from road grit and salt, although riding without fenders is unpleasant when it's wet.

Always good to see your International, Tom. Still play bike polo with the fixed gear Viscount? When you first brought it up, I searched around for a bike polo league here, no such luck...

Okay, I finished up the winter commuter. Definitely not C or V, but I’m old.
Drivetrain is a 1x8 with Shimano bar end and XTR RD. Shimano 600 crankset with an SRAM ring. Brooks C-17 because it’s waterproof. 38mm Soma tires, which will get swapped out for 35mm Schwalbe Marathon Winter studded tires once (or if) we get snow and ice here this winter. SP generator hub and B&M lamp so I don’t need to deal with charging my lighting devices. Wald basket and Nitto front rack.
I took it around the block for a test ride, and all felt very smooth. Brakes likely need some bedding in, but they work. By no means a sprightly ride, but that’s not necessary for my short urban commute.

Thanks! The new handlebars and tires and rear rack are huge improvements.
Oh god no. I look back at that time and ask myself what I was thinking. I could have gotten so hurt. At my age and stiffness, there are certain sports I should not start.

^ Thanks! I actually think it’s pretty darn ugly with all the various frame/fork angles not exactly working in harmony. But that’s somehow appropriate for its intended usage. I realized this morning that I have a 650b disc wheelset with front dynamo hub that I might try. Clearance at the rear brake bridge is surprisingly tight with 700 x 38mm and fenders. Tons of room side to side, but not when it comes to height.

I guess I have at least two winter bikes.
This is Citi Bike's classic bike. Sturmey Archer front brake dynamo hub, Nuvinci (now called Enviolo) continuously variable ratio rear hub with drum brake. Heavy duty everything. Provides an upright riding position. Weighs about 50 lbs. Not pleasant to ride, but it's the right bike for the job. And it feels very confident in slippery slush compared with anything I own. I suspect it helps to have most of the weight on the rear wheel. The brakes are really good and reliable in all weather.
This is the latest model e-bike. It weighs about 80 lbs. It easily goes to 18 mph or so. I haven't tried it yet when the ground is slippery, and I'm not sure if I ever will.

To heck with freezing up derailleurs and quick drain batteries in the cold. Replenished lubricant using Tri-flow in the Alfine 8 speed, a wipe of graphite for the cable, wax chain. Crisp!
Dyno hub for headlamp and strobe function. I considered the dyno to power the tail light as well but figured its less ideal for urban traffic at busy stops.
Crash proofed for those exciting moments. Learned the hard way.. more than once! Brake cal's, levers and shifter are protected. The Shimano hub cable is a clean tucked in arrangement. Also made a small steel guard to protect the front hub dyno terminal connector.
700x42c with thick rubber inner tubes, no latex or tubeless. Saddle cover and a pop-off mirror completes the setup.

My bad weather winter commuter is this 1980s Schwinn Sierra with Schwalbe Marathon Winter studded tires. It comes out when the weather is not good and when the roads are salted. I only clean it once spring comes, so it is getting corroded and slowly wasting away -- but I figure it will last as long as I'm working for a living and probably longer, but not too worried about it if it doesn't!
8 degrees plus 15-20 mph winds and nice crunchy hard packed snow on the ride to work today -- but nice and sunny!

This thread inspired me to put some tires on my 1990 Cannondale ST400 that could handle snow and ice. I installed a set of Kenda CX, 27x1 3/8 tires. Still room for bigger. I need fenders for the slushy wet sections now that it’s above freezing for the next week during the day.

I’m spoiled with mild winters here in the SF Bay area, but when it does rain (like today), I take my fendered Gitane Grand Tourisme. Something weird happened with the lighting on the rims. They're actually polished alloy Fiamme Reds--just real dirty!
If it’s not raining, I usually take my Cilo Pacer.

I no longer commute for two reasons. One, the office that was once 5.5 miles away moved 1000 miles away. Two, I retired.
