They are very good.

My extreme weather boots have a base rating of -40C and a tread that is very good and designed for ice, the Yaktrax are even better on ice and can be carried and worn over shoes and lighter boots.

I have a pair of yaktrax... found out the hard way that while studded tires will help you a lot on glare ice, they don't do jack when you come to a stop and put your foot down...

We have about another 6 weeks before average first frost Our "bad" winter weather doesn't normally kick in until January and by the first of April we are done with frost for the year.

We're still struggling to keep the temps under triple digits. Though the day before yesterday dropped into the '80s.

October and April are for ice storms here, with snow in all the months in between. A couple days ago it was 93F, yesterday the high was 63 and the low was 38. Thats more than a 50 degree drop in a very short time. I hope this means a nice cold winter for us!

It's not uncommon to see that big of a drop in one day (usually less than 12 hours) here. A couple of years back when we had those blizzards- one is rare, plural is unheard of in these parts- OK set new records for the low and high temps with in a span of 48 hours. Something like -30 something up in to the 70's.

Yes it's amazing how fast temps can change in the winter. One time I rode to work in afternoon rain at 50F degrees. When my shift ended eight hours later, the temp was 20F and the wind was 50 mph. The rain puddles had quick-frozen into solid ice. My bike literally blew sideways in the crosswind when I slowed down almost to a trackstand.

When I walk it is usually for fun. Walking around the neighborhood seems to bring my attention to the present moment. It brings focus. Bicycling doesn't do that for me.

A backpack with water is all I take with me because the post office and a grocery store are within one mile of home. Sometimes I'll make a couple of stops to pick up things. One thing I keep forgetting to buy is pepper spray. I want to have some handy for the two and four legged trouble makers.

I think it might be fun to walk across the country as an adventure. This is probably because I've never actually traveled more than five miles on foot. I'm considering building up to walking across the city and back in one day. That would be representative of an actual day of travel. By the time I can do that with supplies I'll know if making such a trip would be realistic for me.

IMO, walking 20 - 25 miles would be roughly equivalent to riding a century (100 miles) on a bicycle. I've done centuries, but the furthest I ever walked in one day was only about 16 or 17 miles. Back in my walking days I would do 12 miles without resting--often many days in a row.

Nice to see that this thread still has legs , especially since my days on the bike outdoors are done for good (unless I can find a Captain who needs a Stoker on a tandem).

I do all my grocery shopping for the week with a backpack and two canvas shopping bags, but that's only in winter if the roads aren't bike friendly, which they often aren't.

Glaucoma has progressed to the point where the Doc said to stay off the streets while riding the bike. Vision is bad enough that he wants me to learn how to use the white cane .
