Silicon, aka glass, is too heavy for the strength it provides. Carbon is a bargain.

It is the plastic which is molded and cured, not the carbon fiber. That just goes along for the ride. Pun!

I’m allowing myself to buy one “thing” soon. One option is a frame on a deep discount ($2k+), the other option is a complete Di2 bike from Ribble ($1.8k). The frame will get built slowly in winter/spring if I go with the frame.
Mind you, I don’t need either at this point, and no matter which one I’ll get, I’ll still be a slow Clyde, but the gods of excess demands a sacrifice at this point in time.
Thoughts?

It is commonly made from another plastic fiber, polyacrylonitrile, also known as Orlon. The hydrogen and nitrogen are baked out of it to leave just the carbon fibers.

Look at www.workswellbikes.com. For under $500 you can get a very fine carbon frame.

It's 10 min. but I was in there from 7:15 until almost 3 p.m.
Getting a little sorer now that whatever they shot my leg up with is wearing off.
On a side note, a man in one of the beds next to me was rattling off all the Rx meds he is on to a nurse. Se had a list and was asking him when the last time he took each one. There had to be at least a dozen, including two types of insulin. He couldn't even remember what some of them were for.

close. I'm an accountant not a material scientist. I know the basics: carbon fibre strands/cloth are mixed with liquid resins and hardeners and then a magic bike happens. I do know that the more resin you can squeeze out during the moulding/curing process the stronger and lighter the frame will be.

I'm just envious. I'm not solvent enough to afford a carbon wonder bike. They are super expensive over here. I'll have to settle for my titaniaum, aluminium and steel bikes.

I've been visiting/calling LBSs and I'm finding that no one carries bladed, straight-pull spokes in stock, not even one LBS that's owned by a wheel builder. Meanwhile, I've looked more closely at the nipple still hanging from the rim... yeah, turns out that I didn't break the spoke - I broke a nipple and, in my frustration last night, I tossed the perfectly good, hard-to-find spoke somewhere along the road.

Back from being not banned but still without permission to access the 41. Exactly what happens during a ban. What was I to think?
Also back from the cardiologist. My heart has been proclaimed healthy as a horse. No angina even. I've been instructed to act my age and all will be well. But all is not perfect. I have UTI.
