Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Damn, I hate that Elston route. So boring. You do, however, get to pass this:

I think I might ride this route on Friday, for the hell of it, if anyone's interested.

$0.00/gal, I was thinkin' of heading out kinda early (8 ish) doing the route,
then having a nice breakfast. Sound good?

Shants, you should do it for sure, but you may want to wear some tights under the
short shorts. It's gonna be a bit chilly.

Just out of curiosity, what was the finishing time for the Knife route for say... the top 5 or so riders? Not that I envision myself as one of them come the 8th but it's nice to know how fast the best can ride this.

It would be my assumption that any previous times would be like comparing apples to oranges. Since it seems that this route was run at the end of November before, there would probably not have been snow and ice ect.

22 miles, average rider goes about 18mph when really trying, I'd say an hour and a half.

EDIT: obviously the top 5 would be coming in at, or maybe slightly under an hour

I'm considering it. I just need to devise a way to be on my bike for 1.25 hours without dying... considering it is/will be the dead of glorious winter. In the warmer months I'm good to go, but for some reason I can't handle cold air in my lungs. Anyone else feel like they've just smoked three packs of menthols after riding 5 or 6 miles?

Any time would work for me. No other obligations.

Hey, Chicagoans, I'm going to arrange that poker ride for Sunday, Jan. 1. Winner gets Phil Wood stuff. I hope you'll all end up too drunk at the end of it to be getting up at 8 on Monday for anything. More info coming soon.

edit: crap, forgot about monkey. Okay. When I post later tonight, I think I'm going to make it a poll as to whether people would prefer Sunday or Monday. It'll be open to anyone, not just fixed, not just forum'ers, but obviously, I hope as many BFFG people will come as is possible.

I'll probably do stage one. It's a nice long stretch - hellish on Milwaukee, sweet and fast on Elston. No bridges (I think)!
