I infer from the "Vintage Lightweight Pricing" page on Sheldon Brown's page that the Competition was the 3d from the top in Raleigh's road line. Does that sound right?

Yup, in most years the hierarchy was Professional-->International-->Competition-->Super Course. The Gran(d) Sport was around at a few points between the Competition and the Super Course.

Could you assume that a Raleigh Competition of that vintage would be built of Reynolds 501 or 531?

I think you can assume it's a 531 frame though I have no idea as to when Raleigh started using 501 tubing.

Reynolds 531 tubing for sure, most likely including Forks and Stays (mine does). Cool Huret "Jubilee" deraillers (try finding one of those on ebay for cheap!). Brooks saddle (B-17?), Normandy hubs, GB stem. Looks like it has T.A. 3 pin "professional" crankset on it, which was standard. Dropouts on mine are Huret, so probably same on this one. They have a wierd rear drop-out adjuster screw, otherwise everything else is pretty standard. ew

1974 Aquila?

Anyone know about this Aquila frame I just bought on ebay? The guy said it's a Italian bike form 1974 that has never been built. All I can find on the nets is a Canadian company that has been around for 20 years that goes by the name Aquila.

Thanks for any info.

Hrm, living in Toronto, there are a lot of Aquilas around but I think that is only because there is a pretty big bike shop in the west end that deals with Aquilas and they have been selling them for years; I don't think that Aquila is Canadian, I'd always thought it was a German company. Here is a link to the bike shop, called Racer Sportif, I will be by there tomorrow and I can pop in and pick the guy's brain for some more info. Beautiful bike by the way, it is a gorgeous colour and would look nice with all black components.

This is probably a better post for vintage, but here goes. At first I was gonna say definitely italian due to the columbus steel sticker and the little italian "boot" stickers on the seat tube. But Aquila is still around, they are Canadian and have been in business for about 20 years. A little more digging found this candian site that sells and Aquila model made from columbus steel with pretty similar decals to yours:

https://www.racersportif.com/Products_SpecialsFrames.htm

On another note, there was an italian car maker by the name of Aquila, so there is a chance, but I would go with canadian and more like early 80's.

Either way, it's a pretty rad looking frame.

I was by the shop today and lo and behold, they are Canadian! I had no idea. They produce some extremely high-end stuff and there were some nice Aquila carbon fibre TT bikes and road bikes there today. Growing up in Toronto, I've always considered the name Aquila to be of the same rank as Ciocc or Colnago mostly because this shop, Racer Sportif, only sells high end Italian stuff and Aquilas. Weird how I didn't know it was Canadian

Campy Deltas...or, The Aliens Have Landed!

Gosh those are purdy, but the introductory price is more than I would spend on a complete bike.

Saw an ad on CL for a "men's 10 speed bike, $10". Sent a query and was told it was a Gran Sport. I got all excited and rushed over thinking maybe a Raleigh with 531 tubing - it's a Gran Sport all right..... a KHS Gran Sport, made out of gas pipe. Still, it was complete, working, and in good shape, so I forked over the ten-spot and took it home.

It's a nice small frame and a pretty periwinkle blue, so some lucky gal in Berkeley or The City will happily snap it up once I clean it off and make it presentable.
