This is older aluminium bike, depending if it has a lot of miles on depends if the frame is still any good, personally I would NEVER buy a used AL frame bike. Al frames do fatigue faster than any other type of frame material so if it has 30,000 or more miles on it I would pass. Make sure you inspect the frame very carefully for any damage (dents, bends, or cracks, make sure the wheels are aligned with the fork and the rear stays, ride the bike with no hands to make sure it tracks straight, look at the ring gears closely to make sure the gears are original, if not I would pass. Also AL bikes of that era did ride very stiff and would make most riders fatigue from the harshness of the ride after just 40 miles or so.
I also noticed something odd in the photos, it could be just a camera angle playing tricks, but the rear chain side stay that comes from the seat (seat stay) down by the dropout where the oval part of the stay flattens to become the dropout appears to have been smashed flat or bent back into shape at one time or another, if you compare it to the other side it doesn't look the same then forget it about it! That area doesn't look like other pics of the same area I saw on the internet, something looks amiss about it, again could be just the photo.
I think if the bike was to be in mint barely used condition it might be worth $300, but that one looks to be well used and since it's aluminum I would pass.

Myself, I have owned quite a few Cannondales and other aluminum frame bikes, no problems with any of them. I've probably owned at least 50 of them. I have occasionally had problems with steel frame bikes even though I like them best. Rust, stuck seat posts and stems, those are steel frame bike issues. Since I usually buy bikes that have been neglected, I see a lot of it.
The black lightning has a cult following, so they bring good money. Myself, I prefer the year older version with Suntour Sprint components.
Just realize you are paying a premium for Black Lightning, they can bring 50% more than equivalently equipped non Black Lightning Cannondales.
I've never kept a Cannondale for myself, I am a steel guy. But if I had a Black Lightning in my size, particularly with the Suntour Sprint components, I would keep it for sure!

Yeah I have three Cannondales older than 1992. No cracks or breaks on any of them. Though on Cannondales back then, the frames were nearly identical. You paid a premium for the components and a decal. Buy a lower end one, and install high end parts, and ride.,,,,BD

when I first saw the CL add it seemed as if the frame was 40 dollars. Didn't realize it was actually on eBay. I'm sort of curious how high this will go in the next 8 days.

I am thinking either of these would work. It still sucks that somebody hacked them off. 1 size too small for me. Seller says it's a 57cm top tube so probably a 22.5" frame.

IMO the asking price is a little high but not ridiculous, a nice original '71 or '72 will bring $1300-$1500 and there were a lot more of them built. This one is an early production (Feb) and still has the previous generation decals on it and appears to be in excellent condition for a 57 y.o. bike. 1959 is the first year that Paramount production was moved from the Wastyn's shop to being built exclusively at Schwinn's facilities.

There is probably enough metal there that you could drill from either side, tap the resulting holes and use cable stops bolted in there so you could mount barcons, brifters, stem shifters or thumb shifters. I would sure try to talk him down on the price for having a "ruined" frame.
