It's still possible. It's mainly a financial issue at this point. That and the basement where I would be staying in Portland is having some flooding problems at the moment.
It wouldn't break my heart to miss the show honestly, but it would be nice to meet everyone here and drool over a certain purple and white Somec.
If I do go I would also get to hang with these guys, which is always a treat.

Well, it's still a few weeks away....the flooding problems could resolve, you might find a few extra dollars...you'd be able to meet all sorts of cool BikeForums members in a concentrated form, AND, most importantly, you could visit with the gang in the photo before they suddenly turn into rebellious teenagers overnight

What is a suitable lock? I'm down in Grants Pass and do not even own a lock. I was planning on bringing a beater FG up to get around on. But beater or not it has parts on it I do not want to loose. There's not going to be indoor bike parking like they had in San Jose. What's the protocol for lock-up in the big city? Is a Brooks saddle left on the bike going to be safe?

Hi all...welcome to Portland!!!
A few things that might be helpful.
First of all, there's bike parking at the Convention Center, but there's additional parking available at Metro Regional Government Center, a block away from the Con. Center on Grand Ave. and Irving St. There's covered bike parking in the courtyard; enter off Irving St, behind Big Town Hero. Also, additional bike parking is available in the parking garage.
Secondly, there are downloadable bike maps available on the city's website. Very handy for exploring Portland on your own. https://www.portlandonline.com/transp...ex.cfm?c=34749
Finally, if you want to take part in a fun group ride, sign up for the "Worst Day of the Year" ride on Sunday, Feb. 10. There are 18 and 40 mile options, lots of food and fun, and it begins and ends at the Lucky Lab. About 2,000 riders are expected. (Hint: despite the name, the weather is usually very nice.) www.worstdayride.com
Have fun in PDX!

Well I just sold my old track frame and a wheelset today and things are looking more promising on the job search front. I should know better by Monday what is up.

I hope you're kidding....the only thing left of your Brooks will be thunder clap of air collapsing behind it 20 seconds after you turn your back and some thug rips it off...I would not leave ANYTHING on your bike you'll cry about losing in PDX.

I think that if you get the lower end (~$35) Kryptonite U lock and a cable (if you have a quick release front wheel), you'll be fine. Just don't leave lights on the bike - those will be stolen for sure. If you don't have quick release, the U lock will be sufficient. There are a couple of LBS's near the convention center where you can pick up a decent lock conveniently.

I don't mean to paint too dire a picture, but I am kinda tied into the local PD, and the stories of bike/part thefts are rampant. Nonetheless I suppose the commonest thief doesn't know a Brooks from a Nashbar. I would bet that the bad guys will be out in numbers for this event, especially the ones that know a good bike when they see it.

Honestly? I don't think the methhead bike theif network has NAHBS on their radar at all.
That said, I'll write Commissioner Sam. He helped get NAHBS here this year and he's running for mayor. I'll tell him a lot of out-of-towners are afraid of bringing their bikes to Portland because no one knows if there will be decent security for parking their bikes. We'll see what the mayoral candidate says...
Bikes in clusters tend to be safer in town than the lone bike in an out-of-the-way place.

Sort of surprising to me that the sponsors of this convention didn't organize some kind of bike valet parking...or even a "bike show" by locals. At classic car shows or races often there will be a "car corral" where the local collector clubs allow members to drive their classic/custom rides to the events. The car owners get an excuse to drive their cars somewhere...they get watched-over parking during the event...and the folks attending the show/auction/race get more "free" goodies to look at.

BengeBoy and I have come up with the idea of a meet and greet at the show itself, just in case all of us can't make it to the Lucky Lab.
We're thinking of meeting at one of the two Starbucks at 1.00 pm. I'll be instantly recognisable!
Does anyone know which of the Starbucks would be a better spot for meeting?

I'd like to think that if we like craft bikes, craft beer, and artisan quality goods in general- that folks could meet over craft coffee as well
The local favorite is Stumptown stumptowncoffee.com
Some local micro-breweries/pubs
Lucky Lab (SE) 915 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Lucky Lab (NW) 1945 NW Quimby
Roots Brewery 1520 SE 7TH
Laurelwood 1728 NE 40 th Avenue
McMenamins are all over see mcmenamins.com (they have beer theaters too, in case you want to see a $3 movie, while eating and drinking...
Some good pubs
Moon and Sixpence 2014 NE 42nd Ave
Horse Brass (may have the biggest selection in PDX) 4534 SE Belmont
Lastly, there is a huge amount of local bike resources listed in the sidebar at bikeportland.org including a bike route version of google map/directions...

It's looking very good now. Just have to check with the boss about leaving a little early Friday to catch the train.

Less than two weeks! Wooot!
I got a sneak peak at a couple of the bikes that a local frame builder (David Cheakas of Southwest Frameworks) will be sending up to the show. Be sure to find his booth at the show, I don't think he'll be there but his work will be and it's worth checking out. There is a chocolate brown touring frame with wood fenders, a silver & blue road bike with polished lugs, and an orange mtb frame.

While we're plugging builders: be sure to check out Frances Cycles from Santa Cruz. Josh (the frame builder) is doing the repair on the Casati and is a super nice guy who builds REALLY nice frames.
