Is my Shimano Nexus Inter-8 dead?
Hello Bikeforums,
I rode my bike home a couple nights ago and realized I couldn't access gears 5-8 on my bicycle. The shifter would work, and I could see that the cable was pulling. When I shifted to 5 the pedals would lock up. I shifted through all the gears many times on the way home and determined that gears 1-4 were fine. Has anyone had this problem before? Is this problem able to be fixed? Will I ever be happy again?

An additional stage kicks in for gears 1-4. Seems like its not withdrawing correctly to get you to gear 5.
Without taking it apart to take a look, it'd be tough to say what's wrong.

So K6-III, what model hub has worked best for you in terms of durability? I may have to buy a new one if this thing is shot.

I'd pull the guts and soak them in a solvent (paint thinner), allow the dry, then soak in ATF before re-installing the guts. Maybe it'll work, maybe not. The newer 8R36 is the Nexus to buy, has Alfine 501 guts and better sealing than the older Nexus hubs.

The new Nexus/Alfine, Sram S7, and Sram i-Motion 9 are all excellent choices for large wheels. If you don't mind figuring out how to get a smaller chainring, the Sturmey 8 speed (w) series is also on the table.

how old is your bike/setup? did the cable or something else just slip?
