Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What kind of wheels are those on the Trek?

And yes, nice rides.

Anyone looking for 40cm light carbon handlebars here is a couple of great deals:

https://www.amazon.com/3T-Ergosum-Car...415266&sr=1-11

https://www.amazon.com/3T-Rotundo-Car...3415266&sr=1-4

https://www.bikewagon.com/Handlebars/...-p9516574.html

Why doesn't BF have a stickied "Deals Thread"???

Also,
I need some recommendations for lightweight, not expensive skewers.

Those are awesome deals on the 3T bars! I paid slightly more than that for a takeoff bar.

Since these are available directly from Department of Goods, you may be able to save even more money. They're apparently running a special where if you spend at least $200, you get an additional $40 off using code 6BC-1-68M7F. I haven't tried the code.

Skewers: most people go for KCNC (~$65 on eBay). I have Far and Near that I picked up for $40 used. They use all-metal hardware like the KCNC. They are a little finicky to open and close, but I'll deal with it for 45 grams a pair.

Looks like the code works if you spend $200 minimum. Great deal.

I'm assuming the "MTB" KCNC skewers work on road bikes?

You may be able to get them to work, but the rear hub spacing on road bikes is 5mm less than on mountain bikes. Road skewers are consequently 5mm shorter in the rear.

MTB skewers will definately work just fine other than too much of the skewer axle extending beyond the skewer nut. It can be easily cut down by ~ 5MM with a Dremel tool / cutting wheel (hack saw will also work). Simply install the rear wheel in your frame and make a mark with a Sharpe marker at the point where the axle extends beyond the nut. Remove the wheel from the frame and take the skewer out and cut it down. You can leave the axle as is but you run the risk of scrapes / gash in your leg if you crash in a way that the axle comes in contact with your leg. With the proper tools you can cut it down in 10 minutes and have no worries.

Cheers

I got the 42cm bar, is that a center to center measurement or end to end? Also, which stem are you using it? Is it the Syntace 99 Road by any chance? If yes, what size and what's the weight? And, how stiff is the stem?

Is there any other option for a stem with a 26mm clamp beside the Syntace 99 Road?

For ordering the Syntace stem(or any Syntace item), I'm assuming you have to order from them directly? Since they're located in Germany, does that price include VAT? If yes, do we(Americans, lol) get a VAT return or they would give us a different price that does not include VAT?

For those who don't know, the Bar I ordered from Bonktown is a "Stella Azzurra Garda Carbon Handlebar", 42cm. According to the spec sheet, the weight is 185g for the 42cm(@ 31.6mm). I currently have the order on hold because I did not know they were 26mm. So, do you guys think I should just get a refund because I can do better in terms of weight/price/quality/etc with a 31.8 stem and bar? Or keep it and just get a 26mm stem?

There are plenty of Syntace stems on ebay, or you could always try google shopping.

didnt have time to weigh the new kcnc parts but i did weigh the bike it came in at 15.6lb so i saved around 100g or so. with new bars i should be around the 15.4lb mark. im so close to going bellow 15lb i can taste it lol.

i think the red collar looks good but i was scared it would be to much red. what do you guys think?

thanks.

lol ive thought about that. i actually replaced the red tires that came on the bike (cont ultra sports) with new red tires (PR3s). i didnt have as much red on the bike then though. i might just get black next time and would have the last time if i could have got GP4000S's as cheap as PR3s.

MNX1024... if it was me i would just buy new bars that had an 31.8 clamping diameter so you had more options for stems (now and later). 26.0 bars should be lighter than the same bar with a 31.8 clamping diameter though. the other reason would be that the 31.8 bars would be stiffer. if you are a light guy that might not matter but if you are a bigger stronger rider you might care more.

you did get a good deal though and it would be hard to find a bar that light (from claimed) for that price. on the other hand to me any contact point on the bike is not a place to compromise to save money or even weight.

Wow, lot of questions. Yes, it was the Stella Azzurra Garda carbon handle bar. Mine is a 44cm and even though the ad said 31.8 it was a 26.0. I got the F99 stem in 120mm. Bars came in a little over 200 grams and the stem was 109 grams. They say 31.8 bars are stiffer but I can't tell the difference. The flex I have in my set up isn't because of the stem or the bars, but is because I have a 120mm stem and a decent amount of spacers. It acts as a big lever on the steerer tube and I get a little flex there if I stand in front of the bike and push down with some effort. Don't notice it riding though.

I know that's a lot of questions, just want to make sure I don't regret my purchase. If you don't mind, do you think you can tell me your weight? How's the performance of that bar & stem combination when you're going hard while standing up to climb hills?

I'm very hard on bikes. I tend to do things like break cassette cogs and pull spokes through rims. The bars are fine for me.

i think i found a new fork thats light and cheap. the only problem is the rake isnt the same as my current fork. my current fork has a rake of 50mm and the new fork has a rake of 45mm. i know this will increase trail and make the bike more stable and less twitchy (witch i think my bike could use) but will it work? im afraid it will bring the front wheel to close to the frame. what do you guys think?

here is a link the the geo of my bike. (52cm)
