I need a new dérailleur for my 2001 Specialized Allez, what are my options?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have a 2001 Allez triple with Tiagra 9 speed dérailleur. It broke the little piece of metal that holds in the spring. I can't seem to find the exact model of this dérailleur. I know it is a "Shimano Tiagra, clamp-on 31.8mm" from the info I got off of Bikapeadia but that doesn't seem to be specific enough to turn up many sources of parts.

I don't care if it is an exact part match as long as it works. I am looking to find something cheap and probably used. What are my options as far as replacements go? Can I go to a 10 speed shifter? I assume it has to remain a triple dérailleur.

Any of the newer shimano road triples, Sora to DA, with a 31.8 clamp should work.

correct, a 10-sp FD will work fine for your application.

Thanks a lot. That is the kind of info you just can't get from Google. I was scratching my head trying to get that simple answer.

I bought it used and I thought it just had a loose cable. When I got it home, I noticed that it was broke. Now I should be able to find the part more easily and get this bad boy on the road again.

I don't think the guy knew it was broke or tried to rip me off. He hadn't ridden it in a while and gave me some extras like shoes, pedals, seat bag, a brand new Camel Back and some shorts he had not worn. He was getting out of cycling because he had a bunch of kids. Seemed like a nice guy but if I had a bunch of kids, I would be cycling all the more. LOL!

Take yer pic... 20 bucks new... you can probably ebay or CL one for 10-15. I actually just gave away a Double 105 (5500) and Triple Tiagra (4503) RD for free so it should be easy to acquire
