Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Or people that don't need a 12-28 to get up them.

So i figured out what's causing this problem. I played with it last night and as soon as I'm in the big ring up front and I shift up into the 19-20-21 range it sticks because the top jockey wheel on the rear derailleur is too far away from the cassette. I don't have this problem with the 12-26 because at that point in shifting the gears are obviously bigger. I guess this cassette just isn't made to be cross chained that much, well no cassette is but others seem to handle it better. Oh well the only way I figure I could get the jockey wheel closer is by adding more chain maybe which I don't want to do.

Loosening the B-tension screw should fix this, but from other posts it sounds like there's more going on...

I tried playing with the b tension it doesn't absolutely nothing, it doesn't even seem to move the derailleur. I took a look at the set up last night and watched it really carefully and it's pretty obvious that on those top gears that with the distance of the jockey wheel the change of movement in the derailleur just isn't enough to get it to switch. The problem doesn't happen when I'm in 39 just 53, I guess this cassette just can't handle the cross chaining.

AFAIK shimano RDs have a max sprocket limit, not a min sproket limit.

Sounds like an adjustment issue.

After loosening the B screw, often you have to push on the derailleur or turn the cranks a few times to get over any stickiness in the pivot. Otherwise it seems like it doesn't do anything.

Shift it into 21 and adjust the B screw while turning the cranks until the jockey pulley is as close as you can get it to the cog without rubbing. I would be surprised if this doesn't fix it because based on your description, this screams "B-tension problem." Of course, sometimes it's hard to diagnose these things over the internet.

There doesn't seem to be any jockey distance issue anywhere, just 19-20-21, maybe there's just not enough chain in the system to go 53-21 effectively that close to the hub.

Medium and long cage work better for compacts and triples, where there is a huge in gearing.

My short cage just barely cuts it for my 50/34 and 11-26 combo. The chain is barely long enough to get into the 50x36 and pretty damn slack in the 34x11.

(PS- I know you never use those gear combos, but you should be able to get into them with the drive train still operating properly).

The long cage basically lets you run a longer chain.

I run 53/39 and I need to be switching between max 12-27 and 11-21ish.

Not to pile on, but I can't even imagine having this type of reaction to someone's derailleur while in a paceline.

srsly.

Man if I followed the general thought process of people in the road cycling forum I would have been laughing at my buddy for running too many spacers on his new look 585. Thankfully I was too busy trying to keep up while he dropped everyone he came in contact with. This forum cracks me up sometimes, I think I'm going to post everything in the racing sub forum now.

The road forum is mostly a parody of itself.
