Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've had my Tempest 2 for about two months, so far I like them. I picked mine up at a lbs when it was on sale. They're very quiet and feel pretty smooth on the road compared to my other wheel (Mavic K Equippe). I'm 130-140 lbs.

I have Orion II's on my bike and am happy with them. Mind you, I have no basis for comparison, as I immediately upgraded to them when I bought my bike. LBS was going out of business, and I got 25% off both my bike & wheels.

Can anybody from Easton tell us what the heck is going on here? Just noticed today that some bike mfgs. that spec. Easton wheels are offering Brontys as a no cost upgrade becasue of "production" problems at Velomax. Are they on strike or something. I am about to cancel my order.

THere are 9 listings for Orions on eBay right this second. Most are new, some are used. Search for Easton Orion II. If you just search for Easton Orion, you will get lots of hits for Prince and Sheena Easton performing something called The Arms of Orion!

Anyway, they can definitely be had if a person wants them.

I opted to order a set of Easton EA90SL's from the local shop. He stated that they would be delivered to his shop sometime this week or early next. We shall see. I know that the EA90SLs was not on my list, but it is the 2007 version of the orions. A bit heavier I noticed, but if I want to shave a 50 to 100 grams, I will do it with somewhere else. I still have a bit of fat I can drop from somewhere to trade off. I would rather have a stronger / stiffer wheel.

Thanks for all the great replies. I will update once I find out more.

I got a new set of EA90 SLXs in the mail on Saturday. The eBay auction I won was for EA90 SL's, but SLXs showed up. I decided to keep the SLXs instead of going through the hassle of sending them back. The SLXs are definitely stiffer than the wheels they are replacing -- Real Design SuperSpheres, 1430 grams, same spoke count and lacing pattern as the SLXs. They are smooth and quiet and I'm really happy so far after one ride.

Got my EA90SL's on 6/21/07 within 1 week of order from LBS. Rode them around a hundred miles now and like them. Will race on these this weekend and see how they perform on the battlefield.

I've been thinking about getting Orion II's, but I've seen them listed as Velomax Easton on ebay. If it says Velomax on the wheel itself, does that mean it's an older version?

Yes, they would be older, but how much older I'm not sure. Nor do I know if Easton changed the wheels after they took over the Velomax line.
