L’Alpe D’Huez (1780 m)
The record for riding up this 14km mountain ride was set by Marco Pantani back in 1997.
Average speed 23,08 km/h with a climb of more than 8%.
Wow.

"The records for the climb of L'Alpe d'Huez actually cover just 13.9km of the climb, and Armstrong's time over that section was a 37:36, 1 second slower than the late Marco Pantani's record from 1997, and about 30 seconds faster than Armstrong's previous best time (both on road stages)."
From the 2004 Tour de France time trial coverage.
I call it a tie. Does anybody know where the timing point starts? Just over the bridge?

I am pretty sure it is about 100 yards beyond the bridge...I seem to think there was a building on the left, a slight incline (maybe 2-4%) then the swing to the left where the real climbing starts. I will try to look at some old pictures I have.

I'd wish there would've bee a showdown between Lance and Pantani, mano a mano. I bet there would've broken that record easily. They would've pushed each other beyond the limits of endurance. Too bad that never happened.

I am confused about the record for this climb. There was a recent post on the TDF forum that I think stated that Jan Ullrich had the second best time on this climb with a 4 second difference between him and Pantani's record, which prompted the comment from Paul Sherwyn that ( I paraphrase), that where it not for LA, everyone would be attempting tor ride up mountains on deisel gears. Can someone enlighten me on this, Thanks
