Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No yahoo for Wahoo peddling bad pedals.

The Speedplay sellout to Wahoo was disappointing. End of life for X. New Zeros are not serviceable and develop lateral play. Zero system is heavier than Dura-Ace PD-R9100 system. Used to be based in nearby San Diego, now Georgia. No promotion or development of four bolt shoes. My bias explained.

Some notes without specific measurements. X are thinner than Speedplay Zero which is thinner than Wahoo Zero. The spring cleat interface and cleat dimensions are also close but it is hard to verify by caliper. The Zero style clamps in the one spot and the C clip rotates. X pedal rotates against the two springs. The round springs go square and the X pedal gets sloppy. No Wahoo support. Paceline and Nextcleat reverse engineered replacement springs and produce them from time to time but I've yet to see any. However, I've found an X pedal functions in an Aliexpress Pave / Zero cleat with more binding than the round spring and I expect wear to the grivory.

X are end of support and I need a practical, high performance solution for pedaling. I was able to purchase a used Speedplay Zero in good shape, and also a Wahoo Zero that is as new. And the Dura-Ace SPD-SL. The Wahoo cleats were brand new. The shallow steel retainer depends on the plastic cover for protection. However, I was unable to reinstall this cover to all four corners to a four bolt shoe. "This side first" did not help. Useless and frustrating. Measuring showed the Aliexpress Zero cleats are close to Wahoo. I tested this last night and had excellent float with no play in the pedal circle under power. Wahoo pedal with the Northwave four bolt adapter. New old stock Speedplay Easy Tension covers fit the Aliexpress cleat perfectly because there is a slot at front and rear of the spring retainer. This better protects the cleat internals than the Wahoo mushroom base. Nothing extra to rotate round in the wind all ride long.

The pedal stack difference is noticeable for the PD-R9100. I chose that pedal because it is the lowest stack available for a widely available and supported pedal. The inboard bearing is a huge plus. Stomp power is there with the wide platform and extra leverage to resist rocking provided by the wider rear cleat than the Speedplay circle. The seatpost is cranked 6mm further up to compensate for stack but I do like the interface. I miss the low stack, free float, and cornering clearance of the X.

Shimano support is everywhere and cleats are inexpensive. Wahoo is not great and not practical. High priced cleats don't assemble. The pedal can't be regreased. I do like the stainless ring over the bow tie. The Aliexpress Speedplay cleats are very good, Wahoo and Zero compatible, and even lightweight compared to Wahoo's. Regreasing bearing pedals works for longevity. Whether a rain bike commuter Wellgo, or a perennial X. The Shimano can be serviced. Using X is like trying to live in a forgotten dream. Can Aliexpress produce a clone besides the Pave?
