Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I had to skip riding today with my friends because work. Phooey!

Luckily I got someone to cover the “pager” (it’s now secured text but we still call it pager call) tomorrow morning for a couple of hours so I can do my usual Sunday morning ride.

We started today's Monthly C&V Ride an hour earlier, since we're under Excessive Heat Warning here in the Bay Area. Turns out to have been a good idea because it's now 95+ along most of the route. Traffic was also less, both car and biccyle. The Spectrum Ride, a famously large and lawless group ride all the racers do, sometimes catches up to us and swarms us, and honestly I don't trust them not to mess up and take me out.

This is now the 6th day in a row of excessive heat warnings. Today will probably hit 100 - again. Luckily, it cooled down to about 61 overnight, so I was able to cool the house down quite a bit before today's onslaught.

Some disturbing comments in the past thread from long Time addictionites. Maybe vol was right, he was the straw that stirred the drink.

Perhaps the ship has sailed. Jumped the shark. The fat lady is singing. Turn out the lights the party is over. Gone belly up. Crapped out. Bit the dust. Taking the dirt nap. Kicked the bucket. Ran out of gas. On Eddy instead of Freddy. On fumes. The clock has struck midnight. The plug is pulled. Cancelled due to lack of interest. Sailed on. Pulled out of port. Dropped off the radar. At the end of the line. Riding off in the sunset. Keg is kicked. The well ran dry. The song is over. Put out to pasture.

Got back from the Germanic states and it's 85º. What have you people been doing? That's pretty warm for Oct. 5th. in N. Central Illinois. Also, the corn and beans are rapidly disappearing and the wind is back. Could hardly keep the car on the road driving back from Chicago.

Regardless, it's good to be home even if one of my first chores is mowing the lawns. I'm out of touch, do I mow NW-SE, or NE-SW this week or do I mow left to right or vertically? I'll have to check with my anal retentive neighbor to see what we are doing this week.

Went with club #2 for a short ride but I added some miles by parking away from the start. 8 riders showed which is a lot considering it was to get to 105 degrees for a high. We actually finished way before the hottest part of the day and the heat was not a factor. There were some steep climbs and I was happy to not be last.

This club is always a fun group but their Saturday rides are shorter than I like and they never stop anywhere for coffee or snacks or to just chat.

Then, while driving home my car started misfiring. Probably one of the coils but it's going to be Monday before I pop the hood.
