Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If the white Fizik tape ever wears out, maybe I'll try it. But, like I said, it never wears out.

Checked out the results from the hill climb race that I skipped yesterday. There was a very clear winner. Look at the weight (54 kg) and the power (5.3 w/kg). Think he's the real deal? Mind you - that power has a couple minutes of coasting factored in.... Also, 5 minutes at 6.8 w/kg? Good lord.

Bags of chips are all puffed up here. Sour cream seals have a dome shape to them, etc.

I had a half empty water jug like this getting crushed by the air as I drove down to Phoenix. Scared the hell out of me - all the pops as it got compacted.

Well, they're puffy at sea level, too. So there needs to be a way to measure the puffiness.

Yeah, I reckon PSI for us Americans. And if there's some kind of gauge with which you can pierce the bag without any pressure loss before you get a reading.

Or you can just use your hands. Lowlander chips bags are kinda loose. Bags at higher elevation are taught, they feel more like a basketball than a, uhh, loose bag.

Check these loose ol' bags of chips

Been feeling weird the last couple of days. Like I forgot to do something extremely important but can’t think of anything I missed. Had a really good ride yesterday. Wife let me out during day light hours, so had set out to do a heat acclimation ride. This year I really have not been in the heat all that much. Anyways I started slow kept focusing on form and before I knew I rode one of the fastest solo rides to date. The really cool part, my HR wasn’t even that high, nor did I feel like I was working all that hard. 234 average power 243 normalized 21.5 average speed.

Today, was expecting another awesome ride. Set out for some 40/20s. First set a guy walked right in front of me and stopped. I had to lock my brakes up and came within in inches of hitting him. Never said a word to me. Started over, first set was okay. Second set felt off and decided just to stop. Did some AR riding and went home.

Been driving to work this month, and it has made a hell of a difference on my stress level.

Hmmm. I'm not sure psi would be the right measurement. It's probably the same at sea level or at altitude, it's just the surrounding air is lower psi.

A very sad day for me, very traumatic. I’m not exaggerating at all. After 42 years and 262,255 miles, including a pretty decent racing gear a long, long time ago and some other cycling achievements, I ordered a Trek Domane+ SLR 7 AXS E-assist this morning.

Cancer meds and age have finally caught up with me. The last straw was on Monday when after being dropped by my wife for probably the 5th time, she said in a frustrated moment that she would like to be able to ride her bike flat out instead of having to wait or hold-up all the time. It really hurt. I got a quote yesterday and made the order today. I haven’t told her. I’m afraid that she’ll be hurt but it’s the right thing to do in the long run.

The estimated delivery date is ~ September 1st. Going to be a long wait and a long summer.

Well.
I intended to ride my usual 12 km. But with a boy and his bike, things can go haywire. The total was 40.3, probably my longest ever mtb ride. I got lost, among other things. Started out riding the 20 km loop in reverse, and somehow ended up riding the 40, in reverse. I didn’t start out with enough sustenance for that, and I didn’t have enough with me either. The last four or five km home were quite difficult. I ran out of water and stopped at a remote cabin containing an old couple and their two dogs.. They filled my bladder with drinking water. I took the route through San Antonio village specifically for something to eat. I feel lucky to have made it back.
But. I saw another group of peccary, this time with a baby in tow. Two more turkey sightings—mind you I had never seen one until lockdown. Heard but not seen a black-headed trogon, a rainforest bird, and the collared forest falcon, very close by. Had I not been in such bad shape I might have stuck around looking for it.

Just gorgeous out there.

I'm not generally in favor of e-bikes, but I think your situation is one that makes a lot of sense. Being able to continue to enjoy riding together seems like a good choice.

Also, f*** cancer.

OH NOES. I feel your frustration bruh. When old age and all its luggage and obstacles finally catches up to you , sometimes it’s best to decide to live to fight another day.

The dreaded ‘E’ sentence. The horror!

Dang I can't remember all the gas laws and whatnot. Gonna have to watch some YouTubes when I get home I guess

Girth measurement seems good, or deflection under a 1kg weight perhaps.

Pffft. Another warrior bites the dust. I’ll tell you right now, I’m not going down that road.

Besides, my wife can already kick my butt, so I’m used to it now.

And now I know the 40 km loop, and it’s not nearly as nice as the 20. I needn’t trouble myself with that one anymore. I was so fortunate to not have a flat out there today. There are clouds of mosquitos, some of them as big as houseflies

If/when it becomes the only option to keep riding, I will likely go down that road. It has such a large effect on my general well-being.

When I agreed to the Xtandi, I had no choice, my doc warned me that my cycling would probably be curtailed. It didn’t seem that way the first few weeks but it seems to have caught up around week 6 or so and getting worse. I get calls from the pharmacist and or nurse every week or so checking up. The last call was by the pharmacist and she said my fatigue timeline was normal and it would unlikely not improve. The good side is that it’s put a lock on my tumor growth for now.

As for telling my wife, she’ll know one way or another in a day or two. We don’t really have secrets.

Order a new bike and feel depressed. Weird.
