I lived in a pick-up truck with a shell for a short time in 1973-4. It was like a van, nothing but a bed and storage. A friend had a panel truck he slept in and we saved money and eventually rented a house.
One night we had parked on a quiet street and in the morning he was sitting in his front seat strumming his guitar and a neighbor called the cops. Cops came and were questioning my friend and one of the cops rapped on my door with his club which startled me and I sat up quickly and caught my hair on the roof vent and ripped out a big lock of it. It hurt a lot and when I opened the door and saw the cop I was pretty upset with him. The cop was about to give me a hard time until I pointed out the glob of hair hanging from the roof vent. My friend saw it and said "Look at that!"
Anyway we found a rental house and were happy to get indoor plumbing.

I dug a hole about six feet deep x twelve feet wide x eight feet long; then framed and sided the inside with lumber. A shed roof provided room for the sleeping loft. The house itself was only six feet wide. The rest was a patio/entryway. Quite primitive. I have always enjoyed digging. I dug the cistern for the new house I was building. And just last week I dug out a four foot deep plastic septic tank and put a new one in its place. I actually only dug out one side and pulled it out with the come-along.
The point of the underground house was for natural warmth, but of course it was not dug deep enough, and it had that one open side.

Ya good call, glad that didn't ruffle too many feathers. Father in law's family is LDS and they are very good people.
I read Under the Banner of Heaven as well RE: fundamentalists. Wild stuff. I am a lover of mountains and mountaineering and have read several of his other books. The short story collection "Eiger Dreams" has some great quick reads.

One can be at a point in life where he no longer cares what other people think and thus live in an imagined state of perpetual coolness.
Where was this? In the USA?

Well, it was 50 years ago. We weren't starving or anything like that. I was working full time as was my friend. After we saved some money I met a man who owned a rental house and he rented to us.

passed 10k for the year today. Kudos for me. I expect next year my miles will be way down.
Went hard today and it felt good. Was keeping power around 220. When I had about 5 miles left I noticed my power meter was all over the place. Garmin says batteries are okay, but i’m assuming they are low.

I also briefly lived in a school bus. And in an apartment carved out of a barn.
A bit of a rolling stone in my ute.
And now that I think about it, I also lived in a canvas tent for a summer. And a three walled log cabin for part of a winter.

Also lived in a little guest house for 9 years. It was actually a pool house but was finished nicely. No plumbing but my bathroom was in the main house and had a door to the outside facing the pool house. Lots of fruit trees, room for all my cars, and my motorcycle friend owned the place and lived in the main house. When I met my ex I left that place.

I lived in a garage, too, but half of it was walled off and was nice. Had to go into the house to use the bathroom but rent was only $75.
