Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's the coolest cycling item you own?

Just curious. I've got a lot of cool stuff, but last year I upgraded from the Garmin Edge 500 to the 520 after much research.

Now granted, I've got a power meter, HR monitor... but this little computer really shines. Calculates and monitors VO2 Max, FTP, lets you select live Strava segments, has a recovery adviser... It's really helped with my training and fitness, and in itself, wasn't that expensive.

What's your favorite "toy?"

I'm going to go with my Earth Wind and Rider merino wool riding hoodie, though I rarely wear it on the bike any more. It's so comfy, both in terms of fit and warmth/moisture regulation, that I wear it almost daily from Sept - April as either a light jacket or as a mid-layer in the winter.

Quoted for posterity.

Everything I own for cycling is pretty worn out and heavily used at this point, so I don't think anything really qualifies for this thread. Maybe my little non-name brand multi-tool that manages to fit like 20 different tools and a chain breaker on something the size of a couple packs of gum?

I have some pretty sikkkk 50mm crabon rims in Zwift, though. Those are cool.

My new pink-walled tires might climb to #1 once they arrive. Stay tuned.

Does the weight penalty slow you down?

A road bike, or more accurately three of them. Nothing is cooler than that.

I recently switched to tubeless, so that's kind of a new toy for me. I'm just above 1,000 miles and I haven't had to stop to fix a flat yet. I've had 4 punctures that sprayed out enough sealant for me to notice. Who knows how many smaller ones have gone unnoticed.

These, the original and still the best. They're funky and cool. Kinda like Rick James.

1960 olmo gran sport I picked up earlier this year. The bike has almost all original parts. I overhauled the bike from top to bottom and all the bearing surfaces (BB, HS, pedals, hubs, and RD) were in excellent shape. The paint job is in fine shape and all the original decals are in very good shape as well. I like taking it on an age appropriate ride (say north of 50 miles) two or three times of year.

I forgot about my collection of souls I've crushed on the Southern California roads and trails over the decades.

I do so cherish my crushed soul collection.
