aside from the standard "chain tool" I also carry one of these chain pliers after having a 30 minute conversation, on the side of a road, w/ my chain & some inadequate needle nose pliers

I just realized they will do the same for me with my coverage, but the (reasonable) caveat is that you have to either be on a road or make your way to one. But still a cool perk for road rides and maybe even for trail rides if there’s an intersecting road closer than your vehicle.

I use stout cotton string to remove quick links at the repair stand and keep my spare tube tied with string also and use that string to remove a quick link. The string can be used to snap the quick link back in to place also but it will do that anyway when you start to pedal.

I hesitate to add this, because it makes me sound much more mature than I actually am, but one thing I carry is prepair.
Before I leave on a tour, I check the tire tread, chain stretch, wheel trueness, lube the appropriate things, visually inspect the bike, etc.
The idea being that the best repair is one you don't have to make. Prepair doesn't weigh anything either.

I really don't like multi-tools like the Crank Bros mentioned. My daughter has one for her tandem and it is so awkward to use.

I make room in my kit for individual allen keys of the sizes on the bike and small Phililps and flat screwdrivers with a real handles. Small pair of needle nose pliers in there as well. Spare brake and shifter cables, tube, patches, pressure gauge, tie-raps, a bit of wire, very small wrenches for rack hardware. Unior freehub remover. Wipes, gloves, Gorilla tape around my seat tube, spare spokes taped to a seat stay.

The only tool I ever actually use is the small allen key to tighten up my Myrricle mirror which loosens after several adjustments. The rest is just in case.

Yep... My Pre-Flight Check List is long. Even for short rides too...
