Bike brand isnt important, but its new. Today it started a thunk, clank, clunk what have you when pedaling. It only happens on the left side at the 12oclock position. Doesnt happen when freewheeling or reverse pedaling and it doent happen when you pick it up wnd pedal. Only when pressure is applied pedaling. I can literally feel it in the sole of my left foot at every rotation. I think I read its the crank thats loose but its was really old post and I didnt want to wake one that old. I felt the crank and it doesnt wobble at all. Any ideas?

I will hope your name is related to Billy Idol. The brand actually could be important more important which model so we know what crank we are dealing with. I have a feeling since you posted the brand isn't important it is probably something from a big-box store which means the bike was never really properly assembled and tuned. in that case if you want to keep that bike you want someone to actually build it for you and make sure everything is properly tightened and greased and installed.

In the end I would make sure everything is properly tightened regardless of the bike brand and make sure the pedals are not damaged either. If the bike is from a bike shop and not from say Wally-Mart then the bike shop would be responsible for fixing it and they would do it for free as it is a new bike and new bikes usually get a checkover within 30 days but before that the bike should go through an exit tune process where the bike is gone through one final time and any accessories installed. However it is possible someone missed something or something came loose and needs to be re-torqued that is not uncommon,

If it is a new bike, why aren’t you back at the shop explaining this issue? Surely there is a warranty.

In addition to an issue with the crank, the left pedal may be loose (or a right pedal may have been forcefully installed onto the left crank) and/or the bottom bracket may be bad.

Why do you think the bike brand is not relevant to the clunking but the fact that the bike is new is?

Take it back from whence it came. without knowing what sort of bike it is, best we can do

If nothing is loose and it only happens under load then it could be a bad BB bearing. But I would start with the pedal. Do you have a spare LH pedal you can swap to rule it out?

I had an issue once where I would get a noise on just one side. Check the pedal first which I am going to assume you did, but the issues I had were loose chainring bolts, which I had never had before. It always happened at the same spot on my pedal stroke and never when I was off the bike. However, I would agree, new bike, take back to where it came from and have them fix it.

And if your shop also told you to bring it back in a few months or after several hundred miles for a free checkup, then make sure you take it back then too.

Some bikes will definitely need that one time checkup as occasionally spokes become loose or the shifting for the drivetrain needs some adjustment.

Juuust in case it's not obvious, the left pedal is reverse-threaded, so lefty-tighty. RH pedal is normal thread.

Maybe he’s in the southern hemisphere. I understand clock numbers are “upside down” there, and the toilet water spins counterclockwise.

Just put the correct pedal on the correct side and always tighten by turning the wrench toward the rear of the bike and loosen by turning toward the front.

I think you’ve got it mixed up. Tighten towards the front.

Yep, loosen rear tighten front. You make more stupid mistakes as you get older. At least that's the excuse I'm using today. Thanks for the fix.
