Spammer question
I saw some dating site spam from this member with a join date of 2020. How does that work? Do the spammers hijack legit accounts or do they set up accounts and let them age? Just curious.

I have always thought there is a division of labor where some people register spam accounts and other people use them. In that scenario, this account would have been on a list

Yeah, maybe there are accounts existing that are sold to spammers. Seems odd since it's so easy for them to spam with new accounts.

I always figured that setting things up has to be better paying than actually posting the spam. Somebody is making money or it would all go away.
It can't be the people posting it.

I suspect many sites either suppress posting immediately after account creation (wiki.python.org implemented this many years ago, for example) or moderate initial posts (an option for Google Groups and probably many other forums/mailing lists). Silent spammer cells might mitigate these. OTOH, people continue to use crap passwords (a list of something like 10 billion known passwords was just released), so it's quite possible the subject account was simply hacked.

We have seen account takeovers or suspected account takeovers, but it happens so rarely that it's not a big deal.
