Now we know you're lying! How can you enjoy a bike and go fast with mechanical gears, rim brakes, and alloy wheels?

With a mechanical drivetrain, one rim brake on a Velocity alloy rim this 76 year old guy sometimes has the hardest time getting this 36 year old Paramount over 30MPH.

62T Vuelta, 13t gear, Brooks saddle, Jagwire brake.

Now that that kids are mostly grown my wife has started back to riding. Nice to have a riding partner again and the Rivendell Hilsen with upright bars allows for more leisurely rides.

Sweet ride! Never seen this model before and it has some fascinating features. As a non-single speed rider but curious, the front brake seems like an a safety addition.

Dual pivot, self-centering. My previous (converted beach cruiser) single speed had an interrupter brake and it was a soft (though effective) stopper. This brake is f'in awesome! Some countries/states(?) require a single brake. My first encounter with this style and I found out a few things. It is very effective, but cannot be engineered beyond handling approximately 28mm of tire width. There actually is a setup/hole for a rear brake if you want it.

So, yes it IS a sweet ride. I don't know who brought it to the states/ordered it, but it is a Russian track bike. I'm loving it Cut 15 minutes off of my usual 1 hr ride the first time I had it out.

Wonder how many old timers/history geeks get the name reference? Bonus points if you can connect to the sonic boom.

The P-38 LIghtning was a sleek beauty!
IIRC, it was one of the aircraft where compressibility was an issue when diving, and a small "air brake" was added to drop the speed enough for the control surfaces to be effective again.

from the Planes of Fame airshow in 2019....

Nothing in their catalogue matches. But they do invite inquiries and will do custom work. So I'll probably email them. I wonder about the price tho. :^)

No planes, just an old guy on old bikes. My newest is the 2006 Klein. I just bought the J.A. for its odd French marque and interesting component mix.

A Couple weeks ago I picked up this Takara Challenge touring bike. Added new bars, tires, and saddle. Just about fully fettled. Has a little chirp in the chain I just cant work out. And still trying to figure out how to toe in the canti brakes....puzzling? Maybe just bend the frame mounts?

Bending is not advised. Back in the day, we'd grind down a taper on the face of the brake pads, so the front of the pad would strike the rim first.

There is a slight taper to the washer behind the brake post.

The earlier picture shows a front wheel with radial lacing, which I didn't particularly like. So I re-laced it in a 3-cross pattern. Seems like it turned out okay.
