Garmin Varia Reliability

I've had a Garmin Varia since May of this year and used it about 90 times.

In the past week or so, it hasn't charged properly, which I've realized is due to the micro USB charging port.

The port has always been a bit more finicky than most devices, but now I have to exert slight pressure on the cable in a downward direction after it is plugged in to keep it charging. This requires me to wrap electrical tape around the unit and cord to keep the pressure on while charging.

Anyone else have this problem, or did I get a "special" unit?

I have a first-gen Varia that now does this. My current generation one is fine. Since yours is still under warranty, you can probably get it fixed or replaced by Garmin for free.

(This is why USB-C is better.)

Have you tried using a different cable? I had an issue similar to yours with a different type of USB charged device. After I switched out to a new cable, it worked okay. I would try that first before condemning the Varia.

I've had my Varia for about three years now and it charges and runs just fine.

Lucky you!

I did a little more sleuthing, and Garmin must know it has a problem as there is an exchange program.

Be careful with your communication with them as the warranty only applies if the Garmin supplied charging cable was used exclusively (yeah, right).

That would void the warranty, but, yes, of course I tried that.

Yes, it really is. OTOH, quality is nice too.

That gives me an idea. When I get the exchange unit back from Garmin, I'll find a conversion connector and glue it in place so I can use USB-C.

This. The problematic one I have still charges reliably with one cable I have. But get it warrantied. It can only get worse.
