Yup.
Back on-topic: Here is DC Rainmaker's review -- just posted today. He cites the bell as the single best thing on the 1050(!) (The guy's reviews are exhaustive, so I generally scroll down to the "wrap up." He concludes that it's a great screen and still has more than enough battery power for 90% of users -- which is probably all correct.)

If I were in the market for a new computer, I'd probably buy it. But since my 1040 is only about 1.5 years old and suits my needs, and I have never had any difficulty reading the screens (including the maps), I won't be buying it anytime soon.

Heh, it has a bell? I think my biggest complaint about my 830 was early on they did an update where they turned down the volume of the off-course warning. My hearing isn't great, and I can't hear it very well at all. And it's not something the user can set. This is almost enough to get me to replace it.

Bottom line, I just can't get my head around paying 650 for a bike GPS!

I can hear Varia alerts on my 530, but the speaker on this 1050 seems much louder. This and the new super-bright screen look like the main upgrades. Hard to know where they can go from here. As the 1040 appears to be getting the 1050 software updates, I could be tempted to get one of those if the price keeps dropping. I do find the 530 screen a bit small and the UI is very clunky without a touchscreen. I wonder if the 1040 will benefit from the improvement in slope gradient tracking mentioned in the review. I use ClimbPro quite often and it can be a bit flaky on my 530.

I paid sub-wholesale for the 1040...But after riding with it a few times, I decided that, even if I had paid the $600 retail price, I'd be happy with it.

They replaced a piezo buzzer with a speaker, so that's why it's louder. I hope they have user adjustable volume. I had to stop the dc rainmaker video halfway through so I wouldn't immediately go bug my wife to let me buy one.

I've had a 530, and the 1040 is light years beyond. The touchscreen makes everything much easier -- particularly the initial setup. Heck, I can easily reconfigure the data screens while riding. The screen size is a game-changer for anyone old enough to need reading glasses. And, unlike my 530, the 1040 has been rock-solid with no glitches in 1.5 years.

It would help if my 530 would just die and then I would probably get the 1040 on sale. I keep looking at these and passing and the 1050 isn’t game-changing enough to consider.
