Should work fine. The Shorty 4, like most narrow profile cantis, is really sensitive to straddle cable height, so make sure you read up on how to get them set up properly.

Consider the Tektro CR720 instead - they are a little cheaper (about $20 per wheel), and already come with road-style pad holders. Modulation and total brake power are excellent, though they are definitely wider and not as "sleek" as those avids (I sometimes hit my calf on my rear brake).

I've used Shorty 4s and Oryx and with Koolstop pads on both, I don't notice any difference. Both work reasonably well when set up properly, but like all narrow profile cantis, you'll have to find the right balance between modulation and power. I certainly wouldn't replace Oryx with Shorty 4s expecting a performance improvement. I'd try good pads first, then play with the setup. If you can't get happy with that (and you don't need lots of tire clearance), you probably want to look into mini-Vs.

I have Bianchi Volpe with tektro oryx. I'm building a new carbon frame CX bike for very light touring, and have carbon rim for my wheels. Therefore, I'll be using appropriate brake pads. BTW what mini-Vs would you recommend that would work well with Shimano STI brake levers?

It depends on your preferences. I love the CR720s on my Cyclocross bike - lots of clearance, easy setup, great modulation. But, the stock pads are garbage and absolutely must be replaced right out of the box. And the mechanical advantage is less than what you can get with narrow cantis or V-brakes. That means to get a lot of stopping power, you need to put some significant force on the brake levers.

I have quite a bit of power with them on my bike - but I set the straddle cables pretty low. I like having a lot of lever movement, for modulation, and it makes it easier to the brakes with two fingers when I'm descending in the drops. With Kool-Stop dual-compounds up front and Salmons in the back, stopping power is excellent. The Dura-style pad holders are really nice too, since I can use the same brake pads on both my gravel and road bikes - and swap out pads without totall re-adjusting the brakes.
