Wednesday was the hottest day New Orleans has ever experienced, with temperatures at Audubon Park breaking the previous record of 103 degrees there before thunderstorms provided some relief in the late afternoon.
Wow! I cannot imagine riding and trying to stay dry in temperatures / humidity that high. Southern Ontario just had some nice cool dry air come in from the north at a pleasant 66* F ride in and an expected high of 75* F. Rain always follows this kind of front but very comfortable.

Kind of a hot and muggy week but I did manage to go 5 for 5. I'm not going to complain about the heat because we really have not had that much of it lately.

Nothing out of the ordinary to report

Partly cloudy, 50sF. Trail-a-bike today, so only 17 min rather than 45-48 for 1st leg. Door to door, stopwatch said 55 min, bike computer said 49 min rolling. That 6 min discrepancy includes time dropping my son and the t-a-b at his summer camp, a couple traffic lights, and me stopping at the roadside stand for strawberries. We're working out a reward system, when he rides his own bike, he gets to stop at the convenience store for candy on the way home, and I get the pleasure of his company through the quiet neighborhoods portion of the commute. On the t-a-b, I use the extra time to get strawberries.

Warming up. Was a very pleasant 59F this morning at 8am. Will probably be 40 degrees warmer by the time I leave this evening.

Great ride up the hill today to work! Cool, but not cold, perfect for pushing hard. I set a PR on the ride in, I always like when I do that; silly, I know. The ride home should be in the 70’s…How nice!
After a bit more adjustment I got the new compact crankset on the commuter to shift effortlessly and be totally quiet on all the cassette sprockets. It is a nice change from the standard double that was on the beast.

It wasn't as hot today, but still humid. 5 for 5 for me as well this week. Of course the distance I'm commuting no way compares to what some of you are doing.

Holy $(@*. I got a free torrential downpour with bonus hail!

It's what I get for spending 20 minutes in American Flatbread drinking a North Coast Old Rasputin instead of going straight home from work.

I could see it coming across Lake Champlain. Quite pretty, actually. With lightning and thunder. The whole package.

Here's the radar image from my iPhone a few minutes ago. I live near the point to the left of the cross hairs.

The weather held out almost until I got home. The flowers I got for my wife got watered as I rode home from the flower shop.

I headed home in sunny 84 degree temperatures. Sound perfect right? It would have been if I hadn't been heading north into a 15-20 mile an hour headwind. Boy did that slow me down. Funny thing was, I'm a terrible climber. Near 300 pounds will do that to you, but I was traveling up hills faster than I was moving on the flats because the hills blocked the wind. The rest of the time I rode by corn and wheat fields. Nothing to block the wind. As I got closer to home I decided that I didn't want my ride to end on a sour note. So I decided to tack on one of my favorite close to home rides. I kept going north of home, rode through a upscale subdivision with nice freshly paved roads, and enough houses to block the wind.... And then had the wind at my back the last 3 miles. It was my longest ride so far this year at 24 miles. It may not seem like a long trip to many, but I'm proud of it.

The ride in was fine- it was cloudy, a little windy... The forecast called for "afternoon thunderstorms" Next time, I'll read that to mean "anytime it's most inconvenient, like when you're pedaling home"... I worked 2-10, and the storm hit landfall around, I'd say, 8. The funny thing is I took my rear RaceBlade fender off before I left for work. Why- I don't know! My wet Superflash is still working, and my headlight was getting low power a little ways from my house. My thought was that I'd charge it at work, but I never did.

Didn't get out of the office until 7:30 last night. But you just have to love the late, late sunsets. The wife and kids were at Nana and Papa's house for swimming and dinner. That's 40 miles away and if I'd been able to leave before 6, I was just going to ride up there.

Instead, I did a long loop across the river. With the sun going down, I decided to take a short cut across a gravel levee. Thought I was golden but about 10 minutes after leaving the levee I noticed my inner tube bulging out of the sidewall. And then, BANG!

I booted the sidewall with a dollar bill, threw in a new tube, and then home with the last few photons of the day. Safely home, but looking at it in the light of day, I think that tire is toast. Feh.

Today I worked 10-6... Lastnight I went to bed after midnight, this morning I woke to the alarm at 7:15, and I still rode! The first sunny day all week, and I had to go in before noon Riding home without having to "suit up" in reflective this and that was a nice change of pace, though. I put my headlight on strobe to stay visible. Pulling into my street, a man had to restrain his Pug from going for me, lol...

Another nice ride in, 60 F (16 C). I ran through a large swarm of gnats, and manged to keep them
out of my mouth. I was surprised today by a speeding mustang on a side street, that is usually pretty
quiet. He gave me a wide birth even though I was in the middle of the road, where I like to ride on quiet
side streets.

Light, but not soaking, rain this morning. Comfortable in the low 60sF. Didn't see any other bicycles.

pleasant ride in this morning....almost had a suicide bunny take me out though. A couple ladies jogging on the sidewalk scared the little critter up. It ran across the road right in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and missed the little guy by what looked like an inch or so. I bet my heart rate was as high as that little critters at that point.

I started taking a new route into work. It's slightly longer. It involves a little more time on (potentially) busy streets, but over half the commute is along a popular bike lane through a quiet neighborhood. And those busy streets aren't that busy in the morning. Oh, and it's almost all downhill.

Great commute today! My first time taking out the road bike. I used to commute on my old fixed gear.

Got up at 430 AM, showered and got ready. Left home at 5:05 and sprinted over to my co-workers place to try and warm up. He was dead asleep and didn't answer his phone! I waited until 5:15 or so and took off. Got to work in record time ~5:40 AM.

The commute was great because I got to ride my road bike to work for the first time and test out the fitting of my Carradice bag which turned out to be perfect. Got to work with time to spare, a nice workout, and was wide awake at 6 AM.

Feels hotter that the 87 F that the weather website is claiming. (I was on sun-baked roads and stopping among the heat put out by the surrounding cars).

Other than overheating slightly, it was a nice ride.

Im loving my new handlebars and stem which give a ride a little closer to a classic European city bike.

BTW, perhaps we should create a new "How was the commute today?" thread for each new year so the new thread doesnt get bogged down, too.
