New Ride Needed

About to complete my second marriage and both bikes were sold, sadly for less than what I "claimed" I purchased them for. The hardest loss was my Gunnar build but onward and upward.
Gained some weight fighting colon cancer but beat it and need to get back to riding for several reasons and weight 275 and living in San Antonio, Tx. So needless to say no large hills anytime soon but disc bikes are slim in my price range. I am needing to start cheap and either build it back up or just ride for a few months then upgrade.
Trying to stay around $500, prefer gravel but anything that can handle a 32 tire will be good.
I see some Specialized Allez bikes in this range and they have rim brakes. Have not had them in years but with light hills this may be a decent option for a while.

Looking for some advice and if you feel a clyde can make rim brakes work while getting back into some miles. It just seems this is what is readily available close to this price point.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Rim brakes have been serving heavy riders, loaded tourists, and even tandems well for a century until folks magically decided they won't do.

Focus on getting something that fits well, is comfortable, and clears wider tires.

Best bet for the dough, a hardtail mtn bike set up for the road. Details like the brakes are too minor to factor into the decision.

Later on, you can shop for a long term bike when you have a better idea of what you want or need.

Doubt that you will fit larger tires in an Allez frame. IIRC 25 was about as big as what we could get in my son's. Don't let that dissuade you though if everything else about the bike works or fits. At your weight I have rolled 23s, 24s, and 25s on my Roubiax. tire size has really not been a limiting factor and I ride mostly chipseal roads.

How do we do it? Haven’t flown off the side of a mountain in some 20K miles.

what size bike

I am down to 215 but was as much as 285 and still ride rim brakes (even on a new custom) I always put koolstop salmon on the bikes.... getting wheels with enough spokes is a bigger concern in my mind

from san antonio craigs list, (most seem to be further away in austin)some interesting ones (to me anyway) but not sure of size for OP

If this one is close to size pretty interesting
