I debated 3,4, or 5 speeds along with a single vs. double in the front. I decided on the 3 speed with a single chainring for the look. I may go to 4 down the road, but for most of my riding the 3 speed hs worked out well.

I hadn't heard of Mario Vaz until I received the frame and started researching it. I knew it was a very well done paint job with great lug-lining, but now that I am pretty sure it's his work, it's nice to give him credit.

Don't think I'll bring it on Saturday. Now that I'm committed to showing it in Davis, I am doing some more work on it.

I run a 4-speed Atom wide-range on my Barnard. The 28T low gear definitely helps out. Mario Vaz used to paint for Holdsworth.

My goal is to get a new hub set and/or wheels that are period correct. Once I get those sourced, I'll figure out the freewheel for the long haul (unless the wheels/hub include a freewheel). I like the idea of getting to at least a 24 in back to provide a little more flexibility on where I ride.

I think I did read about Mario having worked at Holdsworth back when I encountered his name. Then I promptly forgot. Thanks for the reminder.

I have the same frame. I posted about it a lot about ten years ago. I remember seeing Mike's frame on a UK cycle chat site. If i recall correctly, a long previous owner had done something to the Chater Lea dropouts that the (then) current owner had repaired before the current paint was done. What are the rear dropouts now? How is that derailleur mounted?

Mine has a tab brazed into the stay, which was the normal place to mount a derailleur back then, which kinda sucks for removing the rear wheel.

Mine takes a 27.0 seat post. The fork and steerer tube are A&P Kromo tubing; dunno about the rest of the frame, but it's a very light frame, a couple ounces lighter than a butted 531 frame the same size.

Can you read the serial number (left dropout)?

You should really dig up @rhm's posts about his Fothergill. He recreated the decals as only an archeologist could.

Hey Tom, when I was first researching the Frame I found Rudi's @rhm post. In fact, this frame is mentioned in that thread. Yes, Rudi did a phenomenal job recreating the correct decals. Unfortunately, when this Frame was redone they chose to use the newer decals. My belief is this frame should have the older decals that Rudi created.

Rudi your memory is correct. This is the same frame. As I was researching it late last year, I was able to find your BF thread along with the threads in the British equivalent to BF. It did have a derailleur hanger brazed on, then later removed before the repaint.

The frame number is 1311. S/N is located on the Fork and also on the seat lug. I have a 27.2 seat post in. I have a a domed top seat-pin that I'll probably switch to. When I do that, I'll re-look at the fit.

The last mention of this frame on any site that I can find, was right after the re-paint, the owner said he was thinking of selling it. I tried reaching out the guy who had it repainted to try to get more information, but couldn't connect. It looks like the bike was built up once or twice, but not ridden much in the intervening decade plus.

The rear dropout are Chater Lea and I used a derailleur hanger on the Gran Sport Derailleur to attach it.
