Miyata Track bike identity crisis
Hi, I am the original owner of a vintage late 1970s or 1980s Miyata Professional 58 cm steel double butted chromoly Track Bike. I was not able to find a serial # on it to determine the model or exact year it was manufactured, nor could I find it in any of the older Miyata catalogs. I bought the bike in 1980 from Shaw's cycles in San Jose Ca., but don't have the receipt or paperwork. I was told that the bike was featured at one of the World Bike Shows I'm guessing in the late 1970s. I raced this bike as a Cat3 racer on the Hellyer Park Velodrome in San Jose which is still actively used. Any help in determining the model/year would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Jeff La Plante

This is something we'd really love to see pictures of. I'm a big fan of Miyata.
You need 10 posts on this site before you can post pictures, and I think you are limited to 5 posts per day until you reach 10 (aka 2 days). This is done to limit the spammers and bots.
Hope you stick around!

Pedal to the medal
That;s a very cool bike and even cooler you're the original owner. I've never seen this livery on a Miyata track bike. The color suggests late 70's to me as Miyata typically used blue on their Professional bikes in the 80's. That's just my guess tho given the color and style of graphics. I assume you've checked the bottom of the bottom bracket shell?

I'm green with envy and want to thank the OP for sharing the photos!
I like orange bikes. I like track bikes. I love Miyatas, especially 58cm ones. This is the perfect Venn diagram overlap grail bikes and one of these days I'll find one.

I did check the bottom bracket, rear stays, crank arms & headset. I even contacted the Bike Restoration Man/Classic Japanese Bicycles.com and he suggested checking all the components, but still nothing. There is no serial # or model # anywhere on the bike, making me think it could have been a one off made to show at the world bike show as the shop owner told me. He was very hesitant to sell me the bike, as he had it showcased in his shop. Eventually, he did sell it & I did race for him on the shop's sponsored team, "Shaw's Cycles".

Have you pulled the fork and checked the steerer tube for any markings?
