Only in Portland are porta potties decorated with hops. They look like Willamettes. Few days of dry weather and they’ll be ready to harvest

A Cold War relic.

There were at least a couple of dozen of these SD-10 Civil Defense sirens installed around town in 1956. Eventually the town grew well past the range of the sirens, modern technology rendered them obsolete and they were decommissioned in 1977. Regardless, a few years later, pranksters managed to hotwire this one and set it off.

on the theme of C&V infrastructure... I was finishing a ride and going past another field where a farm house used to be. The change from small family farms to large consolidated farms has led to many old farm houses just being torn down. Some of the old adjacent structures may remain, such as this windmill. Traditionally, these were used to pump water for livestock, which was the case when I was a kid and my dad still farmed.
I'd seen this windmill many times as I rode by, but this time stopped for a closer look....

I'd always assumed that it would be a rusted hulk, like every other windmill that has managed to avoid being torn down. This one looked like it had been restored, but I'm stumped as to why anyone would do this (except for the one that is on display at the nearby Wheels O' Time museum).

Let me know if you've been looking for one of these for your backyard!

Richmond Park, London last Sunday
Quite hot (26C) so the deer were looking for trees to shelter under.
I'm standing 20 feet from the main road.

Apparently there are over 630 deer in the park: https://www.royalparks.org.uk/visit/...-richmond-park

Cool, mini deer! And what's the penalty for peasants poaching the king's deer? I seem to remember hanging.

I was in Vermont in the 3rd week of August. In the area I was in, they have one paved public road, and all the rest of the public roads are dirt/gravel. They also have virtually no level ground. It's all pretty steeply sloped.

I actually have one in my backyard. Well, sort of. This "American wind motor" is located near Zaandam, fairly close to me. It is called The Hercules:

It is an industrial monument, and has been pictured by local artist Peter Pontiac in 1996. I own a copy of that picture, and it has been gracing the wall of my office for over 25 years:

If that were in a gas station restroom it would be perfect.

That is huge!
In an era when aerodynamic knowledge was limited, it was quite high tech. It's also suited to mass production, which is handy.
We have wind turbines here in central Illinois that generate electrical power, but the low (medium?) tech windmill is something that's easy to understand and utilize.
Their time has passed, which is why they are mostly gone. As I mentioned, the local museum has one on display and is even operating!

When I took these photos, it was in action, pumping water into the livestock water tank. The only thing it was missing were a few squeaks as the windmill spun.

When I was a kid in the 1960s, there were still a lot of those windmill structures standing on farms around northwest Ohio. The pumps had been disconnected, but many still had the turbine spinning away in the breeze. They are almost all gone now. After the Rural Electrification Act of the 1930s finally brought electricity out of the cities to the rural areas, they became obsolete. I have seen some still in use in the western states to provide water to livestock in remote areas. Some of the country estate owners use a smaller modern version to power an aerator pump for their backyard ponds.

I think I'm pulling myself out of a slump of sorts. My home life and work life have been good, but I haven't wanted to exercise. I became so weak and stiff that I'm in physical therapy My recovery has been a matter of doing small things to build momentum, and now rather than whining to myself "I don' wanna!" it is turning to "yes I'd love to." I love commuting by bike but rarely take myself out for rides for fun or fitness. Today I decided I would go out for 30 minutes maximum. I was in High Falls, NY, a hilly area where we spend most of our weekends. If I had wanted to ride gently, it would have been hard, but I didn't mind going vigorously. I thought ahead to the toughest climbs of the route in my head, and I heard myself say, "No, that's too much trouble. No it's not, it's fine." And yes, it was all fine. I felt great afterwards.

The leaves are just beginning to change colors and fall.
