Fuzzybox, stop giving advice if you don't know what you're talking about.
It's not just the pegs that aren't meant for grinding, it's the entire bike. And having non-knurled pegs on a flatland bike is totally useless.
EDIT: The stock gyro is fine.

Just because it says flatland doesn't mean you can't go off some stairs once in a while or grind some ledges. I have a bike for dirt and I ended up switching to street and I still use it.

And no, there are no flatlander bikes that can grind and hold up to it. Only grinds I've seen on flatland bikes was catfish doing a small feeble grind down a small, smooth ledge at a skatepark.

That' cause I can't bunny hop high enough, and I doubt your going to be grinding 24/7 on it.
Edit: I had a race bike given to me and I learned street stuff on that I don't see one problem with it.

Flatland bikes are all damn small, I ride ramps, street and DJ's on my 20.1, and it feels a little long when I try to do hang fives and such. Bottom line is he'll get used to it.
Also, what the hell kind of street stuff can you learn if you cant even hop?
